Driving south of Bateman's Bay today, through the Eurobodalla National Park and saw an Eastern Grey hop across the road and bound over a paddock fence, then saw a small wallaby (pademelon?) in clifftop scrub, then a pair of in long grass between a paddock and the road, and then some basking on the breakwater at Narooma and casually frolicking in the waters as the tide changed. Also many many birds. Hurrah for the south coast and wildlife.

The snow is.. out of control.

The emus have become loch ness snowmonsters, slinking along paths snowplowed along the farm, with 4ft+ drifts on either side.

the coat of arms? “We know colonists hunted emus and kangaroos in Tasmania. were rarely seen on the island after 1845. But was hunting by a few hungry settlers enough to take out the whole population?”

They’re on our coat of arms but extinct in . Rewilding with will be good for the island state’s ecosystems. In the early days of British occupation, colonists hunting with purpose-bred dogs slaughtered so many emus that the population crashed.

"The Tasmanian emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae diemenensis) persisted alongside Aboriginal people for ∼40,000 years, for the last ∼14,000 years of which Tasmania was a large, continental island. This population of was extirpated soon after European colonization in the 19th century."

Just passed a fine hour (of our two day drive from Qld to Vic, 1500km) listening to Sarah Kanowski on ABC Radio interviewing Deborah Frances White, comedian and Guilty Feminist podcaster. About ten minutes in I had a blood-chilling fear (unfounded except for the word feminist), that this lovely-sounding person might have a horrid definition of feminism. She doesn't! She is delightful! Another happy 100km and we saw emus. All up, a good day.

Adult and 'teenage' emus walking in the dry bed of the Wooramel River, Wooramel River Station Western Australia. The river is mostly dry - unless they get a lot of rain upstream, for example a tropical cyclone. The station does however have artesian pools for you to enjoy (fenced off from emus).
