As long as we continue to view homelessness as a crime, we'll never come close to addressing the core issues. Threatening homeless people with arrest and throwing away their tents solves nothing, and it's shameful. The article is about Boston, but the forced removal of encampments is happening all over the country.

This is not a solution

With no housing alternatives offered, Minneapolis PD & public works destroyed two encampments today, across the river from each other. These housed peaceful people who lived in community. The two camps shared resources.

The thing about breaking up functional living situations is that it resets peoples lives back to zero. Minneapolis officials state “encampment living is not dignified” as they throw peoples tents & basic survival gear in dumpsters.

This is a press release from today. Seeing the photos makes me feel really sad. Everyone deserves a home. There are empty homes and apartments around the #encampment. There are more than enough empty homes in Minneapolis every unhoused person to have shelter.

"🚨Homelesss Encampment EVICTION🚨 The Montreal Autonomous Tenants' Union is calling for a public demonstration this Monday, 5:30pm, outside Atwater metro station (Cabot Square). We have received word from a union member living within the encampment under the Ville-Marie Expressway that an eviction is planned for the first week of March. True or not, we are asking for the permanent cancellation of this "postponed" eviction, and arrangements for good housing for encampment residents. Share widely and bring out your networks.

These evictions are not solutions to homelessness and do not improve the lives of people who are homeless. Homelessness is caused by our broken shelter system, the predatory rents and evictions of landlords, and the modern austerity politics of capitalist governments who underfund and mismanage mental health, social, and housing services.

Some members of the encampment have been living there for over five years. After our union helped to push back the last eviction, members of the encampment were promised good housing by the government. From what we can tell, this ended up being only talk and PR.

This is the site of a large #unhousedPeople #encampment until a day or two ago at which time people were removed by #MNDot and other local #authorities.

Update about the eviction at the underpass:

News reports state that the eviction is being postponed.

As often happens with encampment evictions, promises are made to give people til the end of the day or in this case another day, but that's when they up the surveillance and police presence and often have surprise clean sweeps once people feel safe.

I personally believe it is important to still have people show up Thursday to support the residents and ensure accountability for this claim.
