My late-father had a set of #WorldBook #encyclopedias in his office when I was 11 or 12. I never saw him look at them. They just sat there on a shelf. One day, bored, I pulled out a volume and sat on the ground, reading. I lost days, weeks, and months after that, poring over the entries.

A couple of weeks ago, two heavy boxes arrived at our doorstep. I put the books on a shelf. Last night, we saw our 13-yo head to bed, a World Book volume tucked under his arm.

Oh wow! I didn’t know that the World Book encyclopedia was still in print! This is the exact brand of encyclopedia that I grew up with and exactly why I started contributing to @wikipedia in 2002.

A bit delayed but none the less a #good #read - #grateful for #libraries is a #foundational #oncept for many #Americans across #generations. The #publiclibrary and #schoollibrary were where many of us found #hope and #freedom. The ability to #roam the #stacks and #choose any #book and #read #read #opening our #lives in #ways that #remain at the #core of #who we are today.
