Europe should cap ‘luxury’ energy use to meet emissions targets, study says
Limiting demand of top 20% saves seven times greenhouse gases required to meet needs of bottom 20%, researchers find
The study, which modelled the effect of narrowing the gaps in energy use between households within 27 European countries, found capping demand from the top fifth, even at a fairly high level, cut greenhouse gas pollution from energy consumption by 9.7%
So energy prices are due to go up again in April despite energy companies making huge profits and the rest of Europe paying significantly less. I don't know about you, but signing this petition is the least I can do. Time to write to my MP as well...

I've just noticed something about the #energycap
If prices are low now but futures are expensive the cap is high because of the future cost.
If prices are high now but low in the future we are paying more due to the energy they are already buying. (See https://www.forbes.com/uk/advisor/personal-finance/2023/02/20/energy-market-updates/)
Really sounds like a stitch up.
The Tories scrapping the energy cap in April, instead of windfall taxing the energy companies to pay for it, instead, shows they're more concerned about Tory party finances, than ordinary people or even the economy, as higher still bills will kill spending in said economy. If they windfall tax the energy companies, those companies, who are some of the Tory party's biggest donors, will cancel their donations. Go figure. Corruption, pure and simple. #boughtandpaidfor #energycap
Govt set to raise #energycap by £500 in April. @libdems point out that £3.1Bill would be enough to stop this rise, & a #windfalltax on the vast profits of #energy giants would help those in need. http://bit.ly/3YdMlrc #ToryCostOfGreedCrisis #SunakOut #RejoinEU #EnergyCrisis

Why the energy price cap isn’t what it seems - But the cap, set by the regulator Ofgem and first introduced in January 2019, only applies to customers who are on a standard variable tariff, typically a provider’s default & most expensive option

Where are the supposed benefits of capitalism and free market economics when the energy companies are able to ALL charge the maximum they can (to benefit the shareholders) whilst forcing people into fuel poverty?
Where is the competition?
Why only in the UK?
