Zinc batteries could be the next big thing in energy storage. They are cheaper, safer, and more scalable than lithium-ion batteries. They could enable more renewable energy integration, grid resilience, and electric vehicle adoption.

It's really remarkable how battery storage is playing a more significant role in California's energy supply.

Typically seeing supply hit reach 3 to 4 MW during peek evening energy demand. That number will only get bigger as more battery storage comes online over the next few years. Means less strain on the grid and less need for fossil fuels.

Looking forward to when battery storage hits the next big milestone -- 10 MW of peek supply.

@rich1trotter @kevinrns VtoH or VtoG is a great solution for many households, and we still need other in front of meter storage.

Bidirectional charging works very well for those a) have cars. b) have cash flow &/or credit to pay for the installation of bidirectional charger c) do not need a fully charged vehicle to support their daily rounds d) own their own home, or have a landlord that enables both bidirectional charging and parking.

About 35% of households rent; about 31% live in multi family housing; about 25% earn less than $50000/year; over 8% are car-free. So at least 1/3 of US households cannot make use of it. (Even more in other countries,)

Then there are the environmental & equity issues with Li batteries. There are much better and cheaper options for stationary, long duration storage. We must enable those.

And we also can use thermal energy storage in many cases (cf polar night energy)

Pumped hydro is climate friendliest for grid-scale energy storage, study says

bizjournals.com/portland/inno/

I have long been a proponent of pumped storage. It is not a new idea. There was pumped storage in Wales when they built a nuclear power station then realized that it could not be turned off. So they used the surplus energy to pump water up the mountain which was then released for hydro at the next peak demand.

Last week, I wrote this story about energy storage in Alberta:

cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/alb

At the time, the province had 90 MW of total storage capacity connected to its electric grid:

Today, it has 130 MW. 🔋

The freezer phase change material excess pv power storage experiments started:

First experiment: Empty freezer warming up from super-super cold, measuring the temperature inside. Interesting observation: small flat spot at 0°C (tiny amount of condensation/ice melting?). Drawn equation is temperature=-57/(1,001^(time*0,9))+20

Second experiment: power consumption and cycle time at warmest set temperature. Cycle time is apporx 35min. Power consumption during this period is approx. 70W average (160 W running) at 42% duty cycle. 70W for 1 full year is approx. 600 kWh!

Next step: obtain some PET plastic water bottles that fit into one drawer nicely and repeat both measurements.

Additional info: a freezer (and fridge) compressor MUST be shut off for a minimum duration per cycle so the pressure from the expansion valve can go away. Else it will stall and draw a lot of power (~900W for this freezer - oops!). This can be dangerous and damage the compressor.

I just obtained a freezer to play with energy optimisation.
Pro:
+ free
+ saved from the dumpster
+ electromechanical thermostat, no electronics brain
+ AC in, compressor and thermostat wiring end up in one small enclosure, there is space for a bigger one
+ can be used as drink cooler with external thermostat after my freezer experiments
+ small, does not waste space

Con:
- overall energy efficiency is "bad" (its from the 80s)
- had to replace a hinge and add a hook so it stays closed
- drawer type, no chest freezer
- another project that takes up space, time and energy

Next steps:
- add Shelly 1PM with Tasmota in the control loop
- add temperature measurement inside
- set up logging for power and temperature

“The 's pause on energy has also prompted some companies to rethink their plans for energy storage in Alberta, said Jorden Dye, acting director of the , a Calgary-based organization that helps match developers and buyers in the renewable sector.

Companies behind at least four projects that included both renewable generation and have hit the brakes on their plans, Dye told CBC News.”
