#December 2, 1879
#OTD Ferdinand Jakob Lindheimer, Father of #Texas #Botany, died.
In 1842, #Lindheimer wrote to #Botanist George #Engelmann:
"I am sending 180 #Plants collected in the #Spring of 1840...
Send me the #Names soon so that I don't have to keep creating #Nicknames, especially for
the #Grasses; for instance, Narrow #Ear, #Panicle Ear, Long Ear, Twin Ear..."
Lindheimer discovered several hundred new #Plant #Species in Texas.
He is remembered in many plant #Names.
