#PlatformEngineering »is the art of designing and binding all of the different tech and tools that you have inside of an organisation into a golden path that enables self-service for developers and reduces cognitive load«.
An interesting conversation covering benefits and pitfalls, differentiating between a "golden path" and an over-abstracted "golden cage", pushing for a more product focused approach.

Try putting people in the right context and be surprised how they excel. Now how do your performance ratings account for that?
Making time to slow down and think ahead popped up at least three times in my 1:1s this week. It bubbled up in my head in the morning, so I wrote things down: https://respawn.io/posts/you-should-really-say-no-more-often

Can your internal solutions stand competition, and do your teams really have a choice? #EngineeringManagement
What are your thoughts on managers posting on the "general" channel on the company's chat, on evenings, weekends, and holidays?
I'm not asking if you think the manager is stupid. I'm asking about your sentiment about their action.

I don’t often quote McKinsey & Company, but when I do, they got it right. #EngineeringManagement
Hey Network! The realities of a complex global economy have come my way (among others in my org and engineering team). I am looking for a new role and would appreciate your support.
I have plenty of experience and expertise in software engineering leadership, management, and directing an organization working in emerging technology (hello #ar #vr #techleadership #emergingtechnology #ai #web #mobile #3d #infrastructure #engineeringmanagement #web3 ... and so many more). I’m also grateful for opportunities to keep my engineering skills sharp over the years.
Thank you in advance for any connections, advice, or opportunities you can offer.

Stephen Bungays "The Art of Action" is not "just yet another book on leadership", but a worthwile read far beyond, and still one of my favourites. In times of uncertainty, it's just striking.
This is about sharing #experiences, #learnings & #growth from the tech industry. People from #SoftwareEngineering, #TechLead, and #EngineeringManagement roles, from #Startups & medium-sized companies, could find this initiative interesting for their development and growth.

I just finished The Gift of Therapy by Irvin Yalom and it's fabulous! I definitely recommend it to anyone, therapist or not. For example, while #management is not at all #therapy, but I think managers have a lot to glean from using the "here and now," and "the use of self," as forms of support and growth for their #teams. #Books #EngineeringManagement

Another all-latina episode of @oncallmemaybe this week, with badass engineering manager Marylia Gutierrez of Cockroach Labs. Marylia talks about how Observability helps CockroachDB users, moving into management while still doing tech work, immigrating to Canada from Brazil, and more!

Working with remote teams across timezones? A few suggestions:
- Think in terms of overlap not timezone gap and actively manage the overlap time
- Send recap messages
- Exchange short recorded videos

I just read this hilarious article about the notorious -10x engineer.
It captures a lot traits of the notorious "-10x engineer" (actually, just a really bad manager).
That said, I also have to share from my own experience https://taylor.town/-10x #softwaredevelopment #softwareengineering #engineeringmanagement #productdevelopment #productmanagement

Imagine you have a team split frontend and backend.
For the next sprint, a new feature needs to be shipped out.
Backend works on the API component for the feature and frontend works on the UI component of the feature.
What I described is a laughably inefficient team setup, LMAO.
Good luck

This: »Slack improves a team's ability to respond to urgent requests. Often teams need to collaborate, such as extending an API for another team's feature. Without slack, such work needs to be scheduled into the plan, increasing delay, and the cycle time of other teams. Small tasks can be handled in slack, done quickly with little ceremony. Remember that high utilization increases latency.« #EngineeringManagement https://toot.thoughtworks.com/@mfowler/110140978580177507
Be more strategic. Think big picture. One thing I’ve struggled with is carving out and making use of time to focus on strategy work. Sound familiar?
Here’s a small collection of ideas to get unstuck, build momentum, explore the future, and make it actionable.
