@kerouac666 Interesting historical context (arguably) - wrote four political tracts (Tenure of Kings and Magistrates, Eikonoklastes, A Defence of the English People, and The Second Defence) in the 1650s against the idea of the absolute right of kings to rule.

was a subsequent work and it's hard to imagine the recent on Earth did not in some way inform his writing about a war in Heaven.

Sir Thomas Fairfax is one of the least hated War of The Three Kingdoms historical figure. Change my mind. I’d anything I’m very proud to be a close relative and a descendant of the Fairfax family

I am still working on my Folk Horror PbtA game, and I am trying more subtle horror. The players aren’t heroes; they are more anti-heroes, for they are mostly deserters, criminals, and other lowlifes on the run from the English civil war of the 1640s.

Nice try but no! As I understand it "Humpty Dumpty" was a large gun mounted on the walls of castle by the during the second (1647-1648) which fell down and could not be reassembled. Hence the nursery rhyme "Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the King's horses and all the King's men could not put Humpty together again!" Similarly "Rock a bye baby" foretells the "Glorious" Revolution of 1688.

Happy 409th birthday (or at least, baptism) to Edward Dobson, stationer, bookseller, pamphleteer, Royalist rebel and literary pain in the neck to the Parliament in London. Brother to painter William, who was over in Oxford doing portraits of Charles I, Ned fought the King's enemies in his own unrepentant - and dangerous - way: he slayed them in print. Edward disappeared from the records in 1644. I hope one day to find out what happened to him.

The execution of King Charles: ‘Let’s put all brutish tyrants down’. The king’s beheading in 1649 came at a time of social tumult. The power of the church and nobility was damaged and England became a republic for ten years. But radicals such as the Levellers, and communists such as Gerrard Winstanley and the Diggers, wanted to go much further peopleandnature.wordpress.com/ The picture is a detail from a contemporary engraving, showing the execution

I've accidentally gathered quite a collection of nineteenth-century English Civil War fiction in PDF format.

Much of it is written by Church of England reverends, but there is a trilogy by William Godwin which features Colonel Lisle, or at least his fictional widow and son. What Lisle himself would have made of that, I cannot imagine.

A military history contact is looking for a copy of a PDF article from 1968, can anyone help, please?

Journal of the Arms and Armour Society, Vol. VI, no. 3, September 1968

Specifically Mungeam's transcription of "Contracts for the Supply of Equipment to the New Model Army 1645"

Or does anyone have their own transcription of the original source documents that they can share?

Yet another rewrite of the first part of Cheriton, chapter 5 🤨

At this point I want to go back in a time machine, confront Hopton at his quarters on 28 March - and yes, if necessary, scare the hell out of him as he'd probably think I was a visitation from God - and demand he write down there and then why he believed Waller was heading to Alresford the previous day, what intelligence he'd had to that end, and what he'd just told Mercurius Aulicus.

When considering the manoeuvrings before Cheriton, we must remember that we only have Hopton's interpretation of what Waller was doing; we've no comment from Waller.

Hopton believes Balfour had been sent to take Alresford. Had he? Cap. Harley tells us Balfour was merely the vanguard of the army. And just because the army was moving towards Alresford does not mean Waller intended to "occupy to win".

We must stop taking Hopton at face value.

The other huge problem with Bellum Civile: Hopton doesn't date anything. Combined with his poor memory of events, it presents a nightmare when trying to get the timeline correct.

At the moment I'm missing an entire day, and I'm much inclined to believe all the other, more reliable sources about what happened when, and leave Hopton to look after himself. He is very much the weakest link.
