A related post of mine, on language reform and prescriptivism:
"By oversimplifying the nature and aims of prescriptivism, we invite confusion, category errors, and semantic muddles"

The Atlantic published a bad critique of conscious language style guides. @EvilJoeMcVeigh takes them to task: https://andreadallover.com/2023/08/04/george-packer-and-the-atlantics-sad-defense-of-inequity/

Curious about a style item I saw in a book this week. Would you prefer "Me Too" or "#MeToo" in reference to the movement?

Maybe #Grammarly has improved a little since this test by Lane Greene at the Economist, but it remains a cautionary case study:

Anyone who says "decimate" must mean "kill one in ten" has to call October "December". That's the rule

Saw a "flauts the conventions" in the wild recently: a rare mix of "flouts" (the standard verb here) and "flaunts" (a nonstandard choice). Maybe the writer plays the flute?
Fwiw, I wrote here about whether the flout/flaunt distinction matters: https://stancarey.wordpress.com/2017/02/03/flaunt-this-distinction-dont-flout-it/ #editing #amediting #spelling #language #EnglishUsage #copyediting #words

In my #editing work I sometimes come across the word "training" used countably, e.g. "provided trainings", "attend a training", rather than "training session/course". At first I resisted it, but it soon came to seem useful on occasion.
It may have a corporate or newfangled feel, but the OED dates it to the 1500s and it has been in regular use since. I see it especially from non-native-English users, but I haven't looked into it systematically.

It's 2023 and Singaporeans are still fighting over this issue. Oh come on. https://str.sg/wFQB #Singapore #englishusage
I’ve been reading a really interesting #bookstodon thread where the issue came up of whether “-ette” is a universally belittling suffix (in #English), and it made me wonder if there are folks on here who are specifically interested in #EnglishLanguage, #EnglishLinguistics, and #EnglishUsage (sort of like the old USENET group alt.usage.english or the LinkedIn group #Grammar Geeks). I know there are collections of books folks, editors, linguists, etc., but anything like what I’m talking about?

Local TV news reporter at the airport revealed that the venue was "crowded with people picking up their last-minute loved ones." I object.
Dear software bot
yeah, nah.
effect as a verb has a particular meaning, which is clearly correct here.

Super excited! Fresh from the printer, has arrived this tomb of a book that promises unending enjoyment on cold winter nights; perhaps when the summer breeze return as well.

I love the beautiful type, the useful addition of an index for editors, and a page explaining the use of a semicolon.
