I don't usually post them because there's so many and it's kinda mean to always make fun of a culture in that way. But Language log likes to break down instances of "Engrish" and analyse them, explaining what happened and what they actually mean.
Also, posting. a sign that says “The car hit cheese bacon mushroom face" is hard to resist.

Apparently, both are accepted. Pet is considered more informal and is supposedly a more 21st century use case. That being said, I know I have used "pet" as the past tense form my entire life (I'm in my fifties). "Petted" sounds forced and awkward to my ear. At least when used in a straightforward manner.
