What I'd love to see is an "anti-#Chrome" with @torproject / #Tor, #I2P, #IPFS & #OpenVPN & #WireGuard other nice integrations from the get-go.

Same with #Thunderbird:
There the integration with gandi.net for custom #eMail is way nicer and less "on the nose" but with #Enigmail integrates there's no excuse not to use #OpenPGP-based end-to-end - encrypted eMails...

@leah Is this still the case 🙄 I remember that I discovered that shortly after #Thundebird killed #Enigmail and I was forced to migrate. That single event made me buy a usb key with #gpg support and create new all gpg stuff on the key. I cannot remember being so angry/disappointed on design decisions made by a opensource project before.

In days gone by I used to use #Enigmail to #ecrypt #e-mail messages where possible (precious few of my correspondents use encryption, sadly). This used to be an addon for #Thunderbird but support for it was dropped some time ago as native support for #OpenPGP was incorporated into it. After a long hiatus, I decided to get back to seeing how to use the new interface, particularly with version 102 of Thunderbird. It looks pretty easy once you’ve configured the settings.

I wonder how I can be surprised to learn that #Mozilla's #Thunderbird collect telemetry infos (including your mail domain) and share them with partners such as #Amazon.

It's obvious they spy on your mails! 🤦‍♂️

Indeed, in case of crash, they even send to "their" #AWS servers a memory dump that contains sensitive data crash reports.

This likely include, your emails in clear, your private encryption keys¹ and everything else the program has loaded and kept in memory.

What does this means for an hypothetical attacker that can access such reports?

I mean... like a #USA agency arguing that you might be a terrorist or something.

1) Since version 68, Thunderbird does not use the #GPG suite via #Enigmail, but directly do encryption "to avoid licensing issues" 🤷‍♂️

@fxneumann #Thunderbird hat das ehemalige #Enigmail #AddOn in das Hauptprogramm integriert sodass lediglich eine einmalige Einrichtung nötig ist. Alles weitere geht inzwischen so einfach wie bei einem Messenger.

@silmathoron No worries. :) Yeah, all components are #FreeSoftware (under the GPL) and #pEp is/was a component of the #Enigmail add-on for #Thunderbird. Haven't tried the latest release yet.

Upgraded Thunderbird to 78.7.1. This version removes the Enigmail add-on and uses Thunderbird's built-in PGP support. They provided a migration wizard which does the export and import seamlessly. A major email client providing PGP support out of the box is a big step for email privacy.

The new version has a more modern look with flat icons.

I noticed that it shows quoted parts in a different color. There is better visual distinction between mails in a mail thread.

I'm pretty happy that #Enigmail is now simply part of #Thunderbird, and no longer a separate plugin.

Less happy that it can only use its own builtin key manager (can't work with GPG or Kleopatra), since that means I need to manage keys in two places now.

Even less happy that the migration assistant doesn't seem to do anything except show me an empty window...

As a #linux user do I really need to have 2 keyrings using #Thunderbird >=78? It is ridiculous. I cannot catch the idea of this upgrade. 😐 Probably I have to switch my main e-mail client. It's sad. #enigmail #gpg #privacy
