Remembering the bright light of Gabriele Oropallo. He'd only just joined our group for about 1 mo and embarked on a fascinating project on the history of shellac before passing away suddenly, surrounded by loved ones. As we continue to study the history of animal materials in craft/design/museum conservation/archaeology, I vow his memory will endure.

In my ongoing program of remembering stuff I told @natureculture on the birdsite:

Last year I learned that arsenic based pesticides were used to kill cotton weevils in for example Louisiana since 1873. Therefore the rice cultivated in those regions (76% of the US supply) has higher levels of arsenic than other regions of the world studied.

I found a document mentioning a plantation called "Locust Land" and was amused, imagining a location plagued with grasshoppers. Of course I had to tell @enthist all about it because, well... #enthist !
