Pendant l'après-midi j'entendais des bruits un peu étrange dans ma chambre. Tu m'étonnes, y avait cette bestiole accroché à ma fenêtre.

Many tissues multitask & now Adamo &co have discovered that when tobacco hornworms fight an #infection their muscles chip in, contributing glycogen to fuel the fight, but at a cost. The insects are weaker and less able to defend themselves from attack

Is there anyone here who knows about ants?
We've recently moved into a place. The previous occupants left a barrel/drum out the back, and it's full of ants and flying ants (among what looks like the remnants of fires or barbecues - lots of loose, black charcoaly stuff).
We have to get rid of the barrel, which means scooping out and binning the contents.
WHAT TO DO?? 😦

Female Greenlandic seed bugs respond quickly, within 45min, to sudden blasts of heat whereas males are less able to cope. However a chilly blast 12h before seems to prepare males and females for a heatwave, suggesting a reasonable future for the insects

Slightly better mothing last night. Usual April/May Quakers, Hebrew Characters and Early Grey, but also had:
1) Oak-tree pug
2) Eudonia Angustea -suspected (awaiting second opinion as these can be very tricky)
3) Spruce Carpet

Had fair hopes last night but the breezy easterly kept temperatures down and so there was just four in the light trap this morning. Pick was this ‘new for garden’ powdered quaker (albeit looking a bit old and battered at the termen) and a crisp common quaker. Other two were another common quaker and a hebrew character (not shown). Not much #moth diversity in these early spring days. Roll on May and June! #moths #mothing #teammoth #mothsmatter #mothtodon #lepidoptera #nature #wildlife #entomolgy

PAIRS. They might be quite plain with their sandy-coloured backs, but the Common Quaker is a lovely little furry noctuid moth and very happy to sit and be photographed before seeking shelter until nightfall. Also here a pair of Hebrew Characters with their distinctive mirrored L shape markings. Both are attracted to light and common visitors to the garden in early spring #moths #mothing #teammoth #mothsmatter #entomolgy #insects #nature #wildlife

Found a mantis ootheca in our backyard, on a blackberry branch. Although I believe it is the non-native Chinese species, still pretty exciting!

They are so tiny and FAST at this age it's crazy
The beautiful black and white patterned wings only grow in adulthood. This little baby has two more years before it's a fully grown adult!
