🥁 The results are in from a 3-day poll across 3 social media platforms on what you think of bats 🦇 This is just a scene setter for my new bat project, so it didn't drill down on the detail (my project is looking at insect-eating bats), but there were some great comments shared from a total 138 respondents. Recording is now underway for the 🦇 project I'm getting started on, monitoring insect-eating bats. I've been tasked with recording on an off-road bush track. Just as well I have a few of those! I have two AudioMoths on the job until Tuesday, as I've configured my recorder with the same settings as the one provided for this citizen science project, and to cover another section of the track. I'll make the 'who's behind the project' info more public once I know more about how the creative part of this project is going to take shape

And I'm looking for 🦇 stories - more so from people who really don't like them for whatever reason. I'd love to hear why. Message me!

continuing my posts of earlier #environmentalart - here is one of a series of drawings i did which i carved into postcards for the exhibit Everything is Water at elizabeth leach gallery in 2015 https://melodyowen.net/exhibits

sharing my early #environmentalart #art . this was in an exhibit at the art gym in 2009 or so... i drew lines around a photograph of a stranded beluga whale and then worked with a friend and a welder to make a life size 3d version of the drawing with the whale missing. white ceramic painted metal rods - around 6 feet long.

Centaurium tenuiflorum - slender or branched centaury of the Gentianaceae family is an introduced/ naturalised bi/annual herb of European origins, said to have medicinal properties. It’s widespread in settled areas of eastern Australia but uncommon. I have a handful of plants growing on hard, bare ground beside my house - barely visible splotches of pink fluttering in a summer wind. It’s considered an environmental weed in some jurisdictions. All these statements are judgements loaded with values and assumptions. We use them freely, but they mean different things to different people depending on your position and privilege. Things I’m thinking about as I mull over the complexities within my NSW Regional Futures project exhibition work. Incapacitated with severe sciatica, I can’t do much but think at the moment, and my brain is foggy with pain and painkillers.
