Yesterday we stopped at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument to make a special delivery. @westernsciencecenter has produced 9 of the rhino relative Zaisanamynodon for the monument. The original specimens are currently on display at the Thomas Condon Visitor Center, but they are on loan from the UC Berkeley Museum of Paleontology and are being returned to their home museum. Our 3D prints will take their place in the exhibit.

It’s ! This is a of the cranium of Zaisanamynodon, from the of Oregon. Amynodontids like this are an extinct family related to the rhinoceroses.

This print was made @westernsciencecenter based on a specimen from the UC Berkeley Museum of Paleontology. The original was found in what is now John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. Next week we’re delivering this and other prints to them for their exhibits and programming.

One interesting thing about this study is that the was distorted during the fossilization process. Depending on the interpretation of the actual size of the ant, different possibilities exist for how it got to what is now southern British Columbia.

More information to come in the future, I'm sure!

So, 6 hours on Barton beach, and these are the ~40 million year old sand tiger shark teeth I collected. The first image is of the teeth with little weathering, and the second adds those in poorer condition. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed today, exhausted now though 😅

I have to remind myself that, in terms of the span of time, these shark lived closer to the dinosaurs than to us.

A pair of rare indeterminate teeth from the aged Stone City Formation at the famous Whiskey Bridge site in Burleson County, Texas, United States. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be much information regarding crocs from this local.

These specimens were collected in the 1980s by the late George E. Wolf.

Very cool writeup by Howard Lee with links to other interesting recent papers on the mysterious Thermal Maximum 56 million years ago. Fascinating!
So – near Greenland, there are ancient volcanic areas and they were responsible for and increase, and also for the sudden stop to the warming.

The areas are named and – who'd have thunk? Did get the names from or was the naming done by geologists to honour the writer? Howard Lee could have added this little info. But maybe he hasn't read Lord of the Rings .
