On a lovely evening 47 million years ago, #Darwinius and #Geiseltaliellus are forced to share their favourite lakeside tree. They don't enjoy each other's company, but are unlikely to do anything about it. Meanwhile,a pair of #Gastornis enjoys the evening Sun while a #Eurohippus takes a drink, safe in the knowledge that these giant birds are herbivores. #Archaeonycteris hunt insects above the lake, while various crocodylians hang out and get ready for the night.

You know that nostalgia has gone too far when they're bringing back the Eocene climate.

Yesterday we stopped at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument to make a special delivery. @westernsciencecenter has produced 9 #3dprints of the #Eocene rhino relative Zaisanamynodon for the monument. The original specimens are currently on display at the Thomas Condon Visitor Center, but they are on loan from the UC Berkeley Museum of Paleontology and are being returned to their home museum. Our 3D prints will take their place in the exhibit.

It’s #FossilFriday! This is a #3dprint of the cranium of Zaisanamynodon, from the #Eocene of Oregon. Amynodontids like this are an extinct family related to the rhinoceroses.
This print was made @westernsciencecenter based on a specimen from the UC Berkeley Museum of Paleontology. The original was found in what is now John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. Next week we’re delivering this and other prints to them for their exhibits and programming. #paleontology #scicomm #npspaleo #3dprinting

The #Eocene #Mahenge site in #Tanzania 🇹🇿 is a rare exception to the rule that #fossil #ecosystems tend not to be preserved in their entirety. Located just south of the #Serengeti, the area has yielded #fossils of everything from plants - such as #Acacia mahengense - to #insects - like the #beetle Mahengea (just named this year!) - to #mammals - including the #bat Tanzanycteris - to Singidella, a #frog named for the nearby town of #Singida.

New paper in The #Canadian #Entomologist about #Eocene-era giant #ants in #British #Columbia.
One interesting thing about this study is that the #fossil was distorted during the fossilization process. Depending on the interpretation of the actual size of the ant, different possibilities exist for how it got to what is now southern British Columbia.
More information to come in the future, I'm sure!

So, 6 hours on Barton beach, and these are the ~40 million year old sand tiger shark teeth I collected. The first image is of the teeth with little weathering, and the second adds those in poorer condition. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed today, exhausted now though 😅
I have to remind myself that, in terms of the span of time, these shark lived closer to the dinosaurs than to us.

A large primitive whale tooth #fossil of a #basilosaurid from the Samlat Formation in the Sahara Desert. These #Eocene aged teeth are commonly marketed as #Basilosaurus. Unlike most basilosaurid teeth, this specimen is not composited, though glue had been applied to keep the pieces together.

A pair of rare indeterminate #fossil #crocodilian teeth from the #Eocene aged Stone City Formation at the famous Whiskey Bridge site in Burleson County, Texas, United States. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be much information regarding crocs from this local.
These specimens were collected in the 1980s by the late George E. Wolf.
We just published a new paper! This has become chapter 3 of my PhD thesis, lead by Robin van der Ploeg (@Robin_vd_Ploeg on Twitter). It is now out in Science Advances—read along for coupled seawater temperature and salinity reconstructions in the North Atlantic during the middle Eocene!

Very cool writeup by Howard Lee with links to other interesting recent papers on the mysterious #Paleocene #Eocene Thermal Maximum #PETM 56 million years ago. Fascinating!
So – near Greenland, there are ancient volcanic areas and they were responsible for #CO2 and #CH4 increase, and also for the sudden stop to the warming.
The areas are named #Eriador and #Gondor – who'd have thunk? Did #Tolkien get the names from #geology or was the naming done by geologists to honour the writer? Howard Lee could have added this little info. But maybe he hasn't read Lord of the Rings #LotR.

Five #petals, 28 mm in size.
Trapped in #ambar for 33 to 38 million years.
Discovered by #EvaMariaSadowski in 1872.
Now studied to reveal to this present that it was immortalized as it was spreading its #pollen.
