I searched my archives for a nature pic that somehow captured time. Found one of a stream mayfly (Heptageniidae) on my watch. Happy 2023, folks. 🎇

From this morning: #Ephemeroptera are extraordinary insects with TWO life stages that fly. After living as children in the water, the subimago flies free into the air and finds a secure place to land. There the insect will transform again. Breaking free from the subimago exoskeleton it steps forward into its final adult form. Those first pairs of wings were needed to get out into the world, but the final adult form has much more to do. Perhaps a fitting analogy for the #TwitterMigration?

A Mayfly in October here in the end of November.
This female mayfly was perched by the office door for ~2 days. Of course, I spent too much time observing her. It’s silly but I get sad when I know a mayfly won’t pass on their genes. Would have been too far to back to the ditch from where she emerged.
