Pretty interesting piece here by Hiram Crespo discussing and advocating for the Epicurean practice of regular common meals in order to (among other things) promote friendship

Here is the last new core concept video (for now) on key ideas in Seneca's On The Shortness of Life. This one looks at his claim that studying philosophy actually gives us more time and life, by placing us into conversations.

People have been asking me to work up a set of recommended works for understanding Epicurus and the Epicurean school, similar to the one I put together on Stoicism. Finished the new one this morning

#QOTD - You go to put some peanut butter on something, say a sandwich or whatever.
You accidentally scoop out WAY too much peanut butter on your utensil.
Do you:
A) Only use what you need and scrape the unused peanut butter back into the jar?
or
B) Think "God's plan" and clean the excess off with your mouth, licking the utensil clean, even though you are a devout atheist?

In his work, On The Anger of God, Lactantius discusses what has come to be called the "problem of evil". Here's a core concept video unpacking those discussions, and his response to the problem as Epicurus frames it

In January 1417 Poggio Bracciolini discovered #DeRerumNatura (written by #Lucretius in the 1st century BC outlining #Epicureanism) in a German monastic library.
That copy was copied from an earlier 9th century text corrected by an Irish monk, #Dúngal.
Dúngal also wrote a book explaining to #Charlemagne how two solar eclipses could occur in the same year, and, incidentally, the structure of the #cosmos as he understood it.

It is utterly backwards that the word "Epicurean" came to refer to consuming luxuries in excess. Epicurus really counseled moderation and clean living. The ancient Epicureans were also intensely curious individuals, and many of them were explorers and tinkerers. They may have invented the idea that we should be ruled by laws rather than by tyrants. What the ancient Epicureans really cared about the most, though, was the value of a good friend. Read De Rerum Natura!
Referring to Lucretius and De Rerum Natura
“To spend your existence in the grip of anxiety about death, he wrote, is mere folly. It is a sure way to let your life slip from you incomplete and unenjoyed. He gave voice as well to a thought I had not yet quite allowed myself, even inwardly, to articulate: to inflict this anxiety on others is manipulative and cruel.”
