Hello fellow mastodonians. I'm an art historian teaching at a small liberal arts college. My interests include #ancient #greek #roman #Byzantine and #islamic #art. My research focuses on text and image relationships in #byzantium, including #ekphrasis, #epigrams, and #epigraphy. I'm working on a book on middle Byzantine #relics and #reliquaries through the lens of #inscriptions. #introduction #arthistory

Still thinking about #riddles (and #epigrams) (having given a paper on them on Wednesday). So here's another one, this time by al-Maʾmūnī (d. 993 CE).
A ruby—a necklace did not incorporate her—
in a pearl in a perfectly made casket:
as if, after she had become split
and her fine clothes spread out,
pure gold in a crucible of pure silver.
