From a Baltimore Sun interview with the Bishop-elect for the #Episcopal Diocese of Maryland… not to be too picky, but it was in the pandemic that the bishop and the presiding bishop said put that cup away… and lock those church doors… and while we have a robust and flourishing Thursday compline (AThA or around 18-23), the vast majority of congregants either come on Sunday or stay home. The bishops and priests don’t seem to be able to drum up much virtual enthusiasm… #OnlineChurch #ChurchOnline

In a lot of churches pledge season is gearing up. With that in mind, I’m leaning towards preaching on Rom. 12:1-8 — don’t be conformed but transformed; discern the will of God; we’re one body with many members and differing gifts.

Comparing a liturgical service and a contemporary non-denominational service is like the difference between a nice wine and Welch's grape juice.

• Kids are going to prefer the grape juice
• Pretentious adults are going are going to insist that they taste the flavors of wine better than they actually do
• Learning to like a glass of wine rather than juice takes a conscious effort
• After learning to like a glass of wine, juice will taste awful
• Both need moderation in consumption

@reverendref what amused me most is that he had to go into a very detailed theological explanation for why he was disregarding the BCP’s advice (& the liturgy police). I went to #episcopal schools from 6-grade on. A) you don’t need to explain because B) I grew up ignoring the rules once I knew them and C) I just run the copier (liturgical decisions are above my pay grade unless we’re talking morning prayer).

Had a priest from another parish/diocese and his family visit at the 8:00 service. He said, “Good sermon,” as they left. Which is nice … but based on my (bad) habit of taking notes at other services, I’d rather he had said, “Good liturgy.”
