@chelseaparlett Thank you for a thought provoking question! I believe that the bias-variance decomposition comes from a formal statistical standpoint but that it has been adapted in machine learning as a catch-all method for evaluating model fit and model generalization. So the graph and the terminology might be most natural for a linear model (plotting mse on the y-axis and df on the x-axis) but for NNs it has been adapted to mean something slightly different (#epochs on the x-axis for example)
