Sundry ways and means
A thing can be eradicated
Physically removed
Excised obliterated
Expurgated canceled
Yet try as one may
Impossible it seems

To erase is a use, my function
over form. Spent at the junction
of tin, wood, and graphite
my soft nub remains tight
against its housing. Though
I'm a worn, burnished slate hue,
I still remain of use to the writer,
or student who adhere to the primer,
Pobodies Nerfect.

Ignoring the shocked gasps at the dinner table, I stepped into the hall and grabbed my coat.

Angry footsteps approached. "This is the last straw. I'm going to #erase your name from the family tree."

As I strode out of the house, I allowed myself a smile. Finally, mission accomplished.

Mum has Alzheimers, her brain gradually being destroyed
recent memories #erased,
the hippocampus no longer employed.

Yet deeply encoded childhood memories remain almost intact
Stories of wartime evacuation or Major the dog; she retells them all matter of fact.

With memories they say it's “last in, first out” when there’s no emotional attachment engrained.
So she tells beloved old stories ad nauseum and we sing the repeated refrains.

And drove west, work erased from our lives,
Out to a place full of old cars, and
Argued about how to pronounce it.
The sun shone all day, we laughed
All day, and it seemed an endless
Paradise then, that time we forgot
