I wish #Pocket worked more consistently with #Substacks. Right now I only read one: Heather Cox Richardson's "Letters of an American". I read free & am not a paid sub. But the daily letters can be read for free. They tend to be long & I prefer to read long things on my #Kobo, but 9/10 Pocket doesn't consider them articles, so they don't show up in my Pocket reading list. Rarely, some are detected properly as articles. But I'm usually stuck reading them elsewhere.

I've long advocated for the Kindle Paperwhite Kids as a better deal than the normal Kindle PW. But a recent change means that may not be true for new customers anymore: lockscreen ads are only disabled in kids mode. https://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/2023/07/13/kindle-paperwhite-kids-no-longer-the-better-deal-thanks-to-this-change/

@ianbradbury I started out e-reading on my old palm pilot! After using various tablets and phones for years I picked up a very old Kobo touch at a garage sale and was converted. I now have an Elipsa (for writing and marking up PDFs), a Libra 2 (for reading in the pool lounger and hot tub) and my partner has a Sage (for reading and marking up PDFs).
Kobo is originally a Canadian company but now part of Rakuten. I still cling to the belief that this is a better association than being tied to Amazon.
Kobo is also hackable and more interoperable. The ability to use it with Calibre, Google Drive and Dropbox is great.
Looking at #ereaders for the first time in years. Anyone using #PocketBook and can give any pointers? I can use Calibre to sync but if I can mount it on #Debian or transfer more directly somehow that's a bonus.
My Onyx Boox poke2 (first gen) is about dead. I like a small ereader like my InkPalm, but sometimes a 6" screen is better.
What new 5-6" ereader do I want? The poke2 4 Lite sounds OK, but I don't love the bezel. What others should I consider?
Might consider up to 6.8" screens if the thing is absolutely amazing. Don't care about note taking etc.
(Probably not Kindle and Kobo, I'm disinclined to go back to an ereader that tries to lock me into a single store.)
Anybody got a https://pocketbook.ch ?
They seem to have sensible privacy policies and such. Researching kindle alternative #eReaders and #ebooks again

My Kindle chose to start dying so I replaced it with a Kobo, and wow, I love it. @bookstodon #Bookstodon #Reading #ereaders

I have trouble getting a stable USB connection between my Kobo Clara HD reader and PC to transfer ebooks. So I use the built-in web browser in Kobo (under Beta Features) instead.
I start up a web server on my PC (I use python's built in http server) then use the Kobo browser to connect to it and transfer the files. Very convenient.

Hey, what's the current meta on #kobo #ereaders? Do they still support calibre?
I'm starting to really like the way I have incorporated my (quite old) Kobo Touch into my workflow as a Super Reference Grimoire, but it's both a little small and VERY slow, plus I think I'm probably going to hit its storage limits soon).
Kind of looking for any replacement with decent organization, calibre support, and preferable with expandable storage (See: microSD card support)
I noticed a discussion on @bookstodon about #eReaders. I have an old Kindle without backlight and I'm looking for something new, so it's time for a survey. Show off your setup! 😁

Tell me about your #ereader! I got a Rakuten Kobo Libra 2, which was faulty, so I exchanged it for a second one, which is also faulty. Not willing to mess with the Amazon ecosystem so the Kindle is out, and it's gotta use e-ink, so no tablets. What else should I try?

Ok - need help. I need/want to get rid of a lot of books (we’re moving to a smaller house this year) and I’m actually thinking of getting an e-reader. So… Kindle or Kobo? Or something else?
Meanwhile on @bookstodon the debate about e-readers vs. books made of paper continues... with the key message remaining; we all love reading but disagree on what is the best way to deliver text to the eye (and on, to the brain).
In the end they are both brilliant #technology, but while each has its champions, this has shown that the choice of which to champion is not an arguable fact, but rather an expressed opinion.
Nevertheless I know much more about #ereaders that I did before we started!
