most 'fixes' are wastes of time and effort.

remapping caps lock to ctrl is just a nicer pair of high heels.

look: computer things being what they are, nearly all emacs users have the money to buy a good keyboard.

so:

1. buy a keyboard that supports multi-use keys (e.g. tap-for-L, hold-for-Ctrl)
2. set up homerow modifiers
3. die happy and comfortable

(i use a ZSA and love it.)

@FinchHaven @JamesGleick Your answer is the best illustration of why will probably fail. The original is a contradiction to all lessons learned about and . In my 35+ years of working with computers I have never ever encountered such a mess. It's ridiculous. The self-righteous attitude of some people here on this platform and the unwillingness to accept any kind of critique is a nail in the coffin of this platform.

How do you press all left shortcuts, like Ctrl W? I have a habit of pressing Ctrl with my left pinky which works well in many cases, but in case of those left shortcuts it's really painful to bend it that much while extending the index finger to reach W.
So I'm trying to teach myself to press modifiers with my thumb instead, and same goes for capital letters on that side... that's more brainpower I'm used to allocating to !

Finally bit the bullet and purchased an expensive, Steelcase office chair. It only took crippling back pain to force my hand.

I hope it delivers on all its promises.

I was told I need an ergonomic seat to maintain proper posture while working at home. Didn't want an exercise ball or a standard office chair because they are too big to store on a boat. Decided on this Ergostool from Autonomous. So far I really like it. Small form factor, comfortable, and way better for my posture than my other stools.

People don't realize the Mac's command key has slowly, glacially morphed from a large key to the left of the Z key to a much smaller one below the X. This has caused many to use their thumb instead of their pinky. Both work, but from an ergonomic POV, the pinky version is more efficient.

Hey @jarango I thought you'd appreciate this!

Honestly though, the difference a decent chair can make to your life is so surprising.

So much of the culture of computer enthusiasm is focused on the performance numbers of the compute and graphics units, all extrapolated from reduced benchmarks anyway and probably don't matter as much to your use case as you think.

My advice to young hackers. Spend more of your money on a chair, a keyboard and a display. These will last across many generations of upgrades. Invest in

A very helpful article which reflects most of the pain I had when migrating to .

Again a proof that success is tightly coupled with and that is one of the weak points of the original Mastodon app. The haptics of are much better and this is why I love elk.zone/ on the desktop.

This article contains good discussion points for a better and I highly appreciate the balanced and thoughtful approach.

Computer-using friends… HELP!

My trusty trackball, ‘liberated’ from my employer two jobs ago, has reached the grating end of its useful life. Help me find an even better replacement!

Note: the are important. I have hypermobile joints and a day with a bad mouse is literally sickeningly uncomfortable!

I would like it:

1. Ambidextrous (ideal) or left-handed
2. Small (I have really tiny hands)
3. Ball at front (NOT thumb-operated)

Do any other work positions work okay for you?
Laying down, standing desk, threadmill desk (like Linus Torvalds had in an interview a few years back), bicycle "spinning" pedal desk (my dream)

So this is annoying: Logitech discontinued mine and my partner's favorite mouse (M570), and replaced it with an "ERGO M575" model at $47, more than double what we're used to paying.

Anybody have any experience with the Steelcase Leap? Curious to know experiences of people who work long hours at a desk. Curious also to hear from people who have sat in an Aeron and can tell me if it's even in the same league?

Also curious if anyone has tried both the v1 and v2 and has an opinion on if it's worth spending an extra $100 or so on the Leap v2 over the v1?

At this point, anything that's actually had some thought put into it is better than what I'm sitting in now.

Not so obvious issue: I somehow managed to mess up my mouse-arm elbow. Not the joint but the muscle(s) for fingers.
My usual position has that arm outstretched quite a bit, and most likely too far. Felt quite comfy at first (the last 2 years) but now I'm paying the price...

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Folks, I need your help:

Question: What is important to consider when it comes to height-adjustable desks and ergonomic office chairs? Which models are recommended?

Any relevant information will be accepted as a comment. 😊

It seems like the camera points perpendicularly and directly in front. And since its at the top of the screen, this results in too high a camera angle, placing your head just below of center when you’re more or less looking perpendicularly to the screen.

The camera needs to either tilt down slightly or allow manual adjustment. Otherwise, placing your eyes at the upper 1/3 position, the screen needs to point down slightly.

@ajroach42 NLS (oNLine System) was an outgrowth of Engelbart's Augment group at SRI (Stanford Research Institute) and also: not military.

I'm attaching an image from The Engelbart Hypothesis (2009) which shows the meditative full lotus/cross legged seating in use by some.

Bill English (also part of Engelbart's Augment group) not only invented the mouse, he basically pioneered the field of ergonomics. They partnered with Herman Miller to design a lot of their prototypes.

Trivia: (learned via John Daneen [sp?] at n CoLABoration 2010 Program for the Future held at the Computer History Museum with Engelbart et al present) SRI actually terminated Doug Engelbart after he gave the "Mother of all Demos" presentation in 1968.

Eventually, J.C.R. Licklider heard of the presentation & was so excited that someone had built a computer network (about which he had theorized, though "Lick" worked on SAGE [Semi-Automatic Ground Environment ]) that he contacted SRI to discuss providing them with funding (which is when NLS got subsumed into [D]ARPANet).

SRI, very quietly: hired Doug back.

There's unfortunately, a lot of confusion about a lot of this stuff as much of this technology was commercialized by companies which had no stake in creating it. e.g. Pirates of Silicon Valley (1999) gets more or less all of it wrong, implying that Micro$oft and Apple stole such ideas from Xerox PARC.

PARC had a cross licensing agreement with SRI and SAIL.

Additionally, it is my understanding that Apple paid SRI licensing fees when they implemented their own version of the mouse (but they only used one button, whereas SRI/Bill English had already experimented with many variations and determined through user studies that three buttons had the fewest trade offs).
