Here’s the thing about the #ESOP: you don’t automatically get a vote commensurate with your share ownership. That’s a bad thing. That means it can be just a *huge tax dodge* dressed up in #EmployeeOwnership clothing. I *know* that is not the reality for most ESOPs, they choose to give EOs a vote+cash divid. but it’s not guaranteed. I think we need a bicameral form of #employeeownership w/ 1man1vote & a mgmt level track. It’d make more $ than a #coop and be more fair than the current ESOP

Just saw the news that #GardenersSupply founder #WillRaap recently passed away at 73. Gardener's is definitely one of Vermont's "flagship" #EmployeeOwned companies, and Will started the process very early in the company's life.

@bethlynnf Corps are just one biz structure but there are others. #coops are not top down, they’re one man one vote. #Esop have proportional ownership. The crucial thing we don’t get is #captialism actually works really well if there aren’t monopolies. (Like how here we can always choose a different server) If we made tax law that encourages these models and discourages big biz & taking $ out of communities the biz will change on their own. We could use #mastedon to do it.

@chopsstephens @tanepiper I think it's much much harder to use the govt to break up monopolies than it is to strategically use the market to do so. and it scares the crap out of entrepreneur-voters to think the govt is going to come smash & grab their biz. Yes, we need to find our balls and tax but the best tax law is that which incentivizes the kind of economy we want to grow in our garden. I suggest we want to grow many #SmBiz, #coop and #ESOP because then the citizens would own the market.
