Wanna know what LEO is doing nearby? Me too.

#snarkhome #bigear uses #ble heavily. I think I am going to build some more interesting listeners this winter. (I'm disenchanted with pure #homeassistant + #esphome as a framework. Maybe raw mqtt..)
I am also having more and more trouble saying "I don't need a ham license" with a straight face.

Had my first ever #Sonoff basic failure today - device is over 5 years old. Thought it was a failed #ESPHome OTA update but even after re-flashing, it would not connect to wifi.
I've lost count of how many Sonoff Basics I have but it's over 40 so they are still the most reliable wifi switches I have used, with the highest longievity.
I recently subscribed to Nabu Casa’s subscription service for remote access to my #homeassistant instance. I had another method of accessing my system remotely but I wanted to purchase a subscription to support their #homeassistant and #esphome development efforts. I get a lot of value out of these excellent tools so it’s totally worth it to me! If you use these tools consider supporting them.
Update: I now have an esp32 running #esphome sitting on top of our electric water heater.
Hardware consists of:
- a knock-off ESP32-C3-devkitM-1
- a 1-wire thermocouple
- a digital input from the S0 port on the pre-existing power meter
- a digital output to a cute little IoT relay power strip thingy[1]
I have an ESP32 running #ESPHome already picking up temperature and energy usage from the hot water heater, adding a relay to control the pump is not a big leap. I just had some zigbee switches on the shelf so why not, right?
Right. That's why not.
Today’s build: IR receiver/sender device based on esphome to re-use those 100 unused buttons on my audio receiver remote to control kodi. It can send IR signals to turn on my projector and switch all inputs for “cinema-mode” which dims lights, turns on everything, etc. when pausing the movie: lights dim up a bit 🙂 activating cinema mode works via siri or by scanning an nfc tag on the coffee table. #homeAutomation #homeAssistant #espHome

I got the ESP32 and was able to get it programmed and setup with the temp sensor in just a few minutes. #ESPHome is really fantastic.
As expected the attic temperatures are maxing out the DHT11 so now I have a DHT22 on the way. Hopefully my attic isn't getting to it's maximum of 80C...
Spent half a day trying to program a pair of ESP01 boards with #ESPHome. I tried two different programmers, built several bespoke programming circuits, and then even tried using raspberry pi gpio pins to do the programming. I bought these ESP01 boards years ago from AliExpress and I cannot remember if I've ever tried to program them before or not. I gave up and got a modern ESP32 from Amazon for overnight delivery.
Ordered a SV06+ to dip my toes in #3DPrinting. My excuse right now is because I have a handful of little #ESPHome contraptions now that are just hanging out as bare boards. Unacceptable. I've also run into multiple situations now where I need/want a part but either can't find something off the shelf or whatever I find is atrociously expensive.
I think I like my little gay LED unicorns. Fifty LEDs, thirty unicorns. Clearly I need to get more unicorns.
Made this out of a bunch of Wilko unicorn solar lights, a WS2811 12V LED string, a DC-DC converter and an ESP32.

Prepared a new Halloween prop yesterday night. 🎃 This smart speaker runs on 12V and will be placed in my mailbox next to my doorbell. If someone actives the chime 🔔it will make spooky sounds to scare the guests 👻
It's controlled by the #esphome media component and #homeassistant
Can't wait to see this in action 🤓

impressed, by the ease of flashing an #esphome firmware in one simple line on #nixos !

“No don’t close the hallway door, I won’t be able to hear the washing machine beep!”
This sounds like a problem that can be solved with #HomeAssistant and a power monitoring plug… now to find a Zigbee or #ESPHome plug small enough
Four installed #ESPHome devices now:
- power meter and temperature sensor for the hot water heater
- pulse sensors on the utility power meters
- AirGradient Open Air PM2.5 etc sensor
- bluetooth BLE proxy specifically for the Airthings Wave radon sensor in the basement
Utility meter needs some adjustment, the sensors aren't reading correctly yet (although I know they work) and I need to parameterize the pulses per kwh setting.
If you are in the UK and are looking for a nice tidy way to deploy #ESPhome Bluetooth proxies or #ESPresense nodes, I've got your back!

Disappeared for a bit here but here's what I've been up to. After two lonely months I finally have hummingbirds visiting my feeder. One even sits on my feeder.
I've installed #esphome onto a Ulanzi TC001 clock and have a pretty cool looking clock which I send and display air quality data.
