A little while ago the NSW state owned energy distributor #EssentialEnergy wrote to me saying to help the environment I should run my heavy electrical loads during the day. The reason was that there was plenty of #renewableenergy available due to rooftop solar.

I like to reduce my #carbonfootprint so it seems good. I check the #NationalEnergyMarket every now and then and see that the price of electricity is negative during the day which implies that there is a large power surplus.

The rub is that by encouraging people to use power in the middle of the day without regard as to whether they have solar panels means that the energy provider is telling them to use power at the Shoulder rate which will cost a lot more than if they waited till 10pm and used Off-peak rates.

Personally, if the power is so plentiful during the day then the day time should be Off-peak and people should then be encouraged to use it. Anything else is a grab for more money under the guise of doing something for the #climateemergency.
