Almost continuous rolling distant thunder here in the BOP, loving it. Pressure is 1002hpa - down a few points but not moving much. Breeze is picking up a bit, trees susserating. Crickets chirping, skies darkening early, blinds rattling.

Took a gamble today leaving the house in short sleeves and summer mode although it was 9°c and dark.
Waiting for the bus in the pre-dawn was brisk but it's paying off now - no jacket to carry in the sun and warmth.

Pressure at 975 here and still dropping. Wind going nuts now. Shows 60kph on my panel but it's in the lee of the house with this direction, I'm sure it's higher. The local roads closed, trees down, main highway closed too. It's going to be a rough, sleepless night. Worried about folks with older housing. Mildly worried about my own.

Pressure is 985 and still dropping in Tauranga. Wind sounds like a banshee at times, big gusts. Garage door is firmly closed but sounds like it's being battered. Not a lot of rain at the moment, but what there is comes sideways at pace.

Just dipped below 1000hPa here in Tauranga. The centre of the storm is 970hPa, the lowest NZ has seen since 1936.

Driving back over the Kaimai ranges today: 29° sunshine and blue skies on the inland side, into 22° overcast and spots of rain on the Tauranga side. Amazing.

The average January rainfall here is 60mm for the month. We had more than that yesterday and nearly 10x that for the month so far. Spectacular weather. 🌧️
