I heard a black bear
gave birth to her cub
in this cabin.

I felt her wild heart, heavy
with darkness. Clawing
uncertain space.

I wondered why she left
the wild to give life
in this human home.

I longed to know if her cub
had grown. Had gone. Strong
into the wild. To know why 
she remained
this way. Please stay.

I sat up in bed. Then lay
back down again. Like
a bear in hibernation.
Minutes lost in hours.
Hours like generations.
