"Maps 1 & 4 The Conan Map (Brest, France, 16th Century)

This Renaissance print is a copy of a vellum drawn circa 1156 at the behest of Conan IV (“the Black”), Duke of Brittany, during a dynastic dispute with King Henry II of England, who was also Count of neighboring Anjou. As shown in the inset, the image’s purpose is solely to assert power and legitimacy. The multiple lines shown in the inset (the only remaining panel of a set of three) proclaim the conquest and rule of the corresponding regions by the Duke and his kinsmen in the House of Penthièvre."

“Map 7 & 8. The la Motte-Husson Portolan (Mayenne, France, 17th Century)

If, as Arthur Robinson wrote in his Elements of Cartography, “maps are to be looked at while charts are to be worked on”, then portolans are the quintessential charts, navigational guides that do not wrestle with other aspects of representation. The Margrave was ecstatic when he acquired the la Motte-Husson Portolan, believing that it would finally allow him to contribute to the defense of the nation. Over time a confusing series representing the same location emerged, with shifting sailing directions. Exhaustive archival investigation revealed that the Baglion de la Dufferie family had the series of prints made to mark the different routes used by the toy sailboats of the Dauphin (the future Louis XIII) to cross the moat of their home in Mayenne, the Chateau de la Motte-Husson. This discovery made thirty years after the series was acquired precipitated a severe depression – it was the reason von Willebrand chose to recuperate in the Kaiserslautern spa where he ultimately expired.”

"We looked up at the sky and created our own maps in order to navigate our lives - fond of the idea, we are a part of a bigger thing that we cannot control and need to step aside, just admire it."

I framed them simply in a deep, narrow ash moulding, with a tobacco stain.

Oubliette Exhibition at Biblioteca Camoes, Lisbon (Largo do Calhariz, 17). Show runs until the end of June (AKA Tomorrow!).

"The Pignerol Gates. (Rome, circa 1760).
Oubliettes have only one entrance – frequently a trap door on the roof, as was by all contemporary accounts the case of the Pignerol cell. They were constructed so that men could be literally thrown away and forgotten. In Pignerol we know for certain that the gate opened once in 1631 and then again in 1670. The plates you see here were etched in 18th century Rome, by an unknown hand, working from the sketches produced by the guards (the documents were then in the Vatican’s possession, they were transferred to Napoleon by Pius VII and are now in the Archives Nationales)."

"The Outer Hebrides Palimpsest. (Edinburgh, Scotland, 1677).

Following the establishment of the Man in the Iron Mask’s identity by use of the correspondence and shopping lists of his jailor, Saint Mars, the Margrave embarked on a reanalysis of one his cartographic collection’s most celebrated collection items, the Outer Hebrides Palimpsest. The connection was tenuous at best: a group of Waldensians fleeing the brutal suppression of the sect in Piedmont arrived at the remote islands at around the time the map was produced. In keeping with our founder’s original mission, the process arrived at no useful conclusions – one unfortunate effect is the damage you see here, the Margrave's effort at redacting the map."

Some of my #etching work in progress - the sea and sky need to be darker and I need to get rid of some of the odd pale marks on the nearer hills.

Time to do what some people say you shouldn't do - apply a second aquatint over the first and then more spit biting.
