#Pittsburgh suffers from September just like #Usenet used to. Serious etiquette violations by new college students, like honking at someone for turning left in front of you.
If the city's growth continues to accelerate, we may have our own #EternalSeptember.

You know that feeling you get when you get to the end of a holiday and you've had time to slow down, relax and think and come up with some cool ideas and new habits you'd like to run with. A bit like returning to school or uni after summer... I wish I could bottle and keep that feeling forever... that should be the true and more wholesome meaning of #EternalSeptember
Someone tells you they're old-school computer geek and they can't explain this image, they're probably lying. #EternalSeptember #Usenet #netlore

Now that I'm 52, I've learned to recognize this dynamic, from the #EternalSeptember:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September
to the moral panic over menuing systems replacing CLIs:
to the culture wars over what would happen when the net got a normie-friendly GUI:
https://www.dejavu.org/1993win.htm
And yeah, I've done it to, explaining "Why I won’t buy an #iPad (and think you shouldn’t, either)":

@ij I am concerned with the future of #Mastodon. I fear Meta is using the #EternalSeptember tactic to take out competition. I am by no means well versed in mastodon admin yet, but it seems like "40 million" users interacting with a server might be stressful. I'm curious if this is a legitimate concern or am I worried due to lack of understanding?
I'm feeling like it could potentially be #SilenceMeta or #CrushMastodon situation.

Anyone remember usenet?
Anyone remember what AOL did to usenet to make it go away?
#EternalSeptember - 2023 edition.
@bastianallgeier Interessanter Rant.
#faszinierend ;-)

@briannawu And most people on Mastodon want to talk to each other. I've had some wonderful conversations about all kinds of things.
It's *almost* like #Usenet *before* #EternalSeptember.
My own sense of #Meta almost being here -- and I am SURE I am not alone in thinking of this comparison -- is to inevitably think of #EternalSeptember almost literally thirty years back, which I do remember well, especially the AOL influx the following March. Question is, will posts appear multiple times? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September
Feels like the launch of #threads and having Threads federated will be like when they let AOL on the internet #EternalSeptember https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September?wprov=sfti1

I can't understand how anybody could be happy or hopeful about #meta joining the #fediverse. The goals of both entities are the complete opposite.

When #IRC or #NNTP first started out, and they became available to the unwashed masses, were there discussions or debates on which channels or newsgroups would be "allowed" into a communities' servers?
I vaguely remember early days participating with those protocols(~'93-'96), but don't recall the contentious discussions(aside from the initial spam mitigations).
I'm sure they occured and we are "just" repeating history here in the Fediverse. #InternetHistory #socialmedia #EternalSeptember

@lolbat@fosstodon.org Did #Usenet decline because of AOL, or was it more about the rise of the Web?
@atomicpoet When AOL gave its users access to the Internet, the Internet in certain important ways changed for the worse. Even so, there were also improvements, and the many people who hadn't used the Internet at all were better off.
There are lessons we should draw from the #EternalSeptember , but that we should condemn corporations using official standards to open their networks is not one of them.
31 years ago this month, AOL unleashes the world onto the Internet email systems:
AMERICA ONLINE ANNOUNCES INTERNATIONAL E-MAIL GATEWAY
VIENNA, Va., June 3 (1992) /PRNewswire/ — America Online subscribers can now communicate with millions of people throughout the world by using an electronic mail gateway that connects to a wide variety of commercial and educational e-mail systems. #EternalSeptember
@film_girl people will try to head off #EternalSeptember for as long as they can, and then wonder why #fediverse apps aren't becoming popular.
I think there's a surprised Pikachu meme somewhere in all of this.
Meta is doing what's good for #Meta, but this could be the biggest #Fediverse surge yet. I'm optimistic, but this will be a far bigger #EternalSeptember than people are ready for.
I think Meta’s platform could quickly become the majority of Fediverse users. Some Mastodon users will move and never look back, which will hurt some feelings. I expect others will threaten to defederate from Meta and some may move to Bluesky to get away from the “drama”.
Still, I'm excited. Just growing pains.

@everbern @technomancy I might be showing my age here, but I was around for the great AOL migration of '93.
