Was habe ich schon immer gesucht: #midi2artnet. Umgesetzt mit #MidiMonster – Lichtsteuerung aus MIDI-Daten. Mischpulte, Synthesizer, Sequenzer steuern Beleuchtungsanlagen. Es kann manchmal alles so einfach sein (unter #Linux)…
[midi alsamidi]
[backend artnet]
bind = 0.0.0.0
[artnet out]
destination = 255.255.255.255
universe = 0
[map]
alsamidi.ch0.cc{0..127} > out.{1..128}

@AlanyG21 @fuchsiii @foone in terms of Adaptors to "harvest" if you want to try the cheap USB route, I can recommend the (#4G only but cheap!) #ZTE #MF79U and #Alcatel #LinkKey.
Both basically work out of the box on #Linux and #FreeBSD as #USB-"#Ethernet" adaptors and are essentially portable routers w/o battery.
The MF79U also has WiFi Router Function (2,4 GHz bgn) so it's a practical option that costs <€50 and just works...

And yes, people still use #i486 with #ISA backplanes and #Ethernet-NICs...
https://mastodon.social/@JohannessNilsson/110968505798759149
And those are "stupid terminals" that can't even #telnet...
And let's be honest, why use #WiFi when #Ethernet exists even on very old machines...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsS0E4G310Y
Granted that's just the "core" system: with only #linux, #toybox and #dropbear as #ssh client...
Nothing else...
It can barely get on #Ethernet and #SSH to #IPv4-reachable hosts.
Not much more.
So it'll turn your #i486 and up into a SSH-Terminal not dissimilar from classic terminals like the #VT320...

Trying to figure out a way to extend the WiFi at this temporary apartment we’re staying at because it doesn’t reach the bedroom and it seems there’s a way to use another Mac as a WiFi extender but I need to connect via ethernet cable and I can’t use a WiFi as the source? Sucks!

So for those asking, the #1440kB #Floppy Version of OS/1337 will be a better #Floppinux with #Ethernet & #Network support and packing in #Dropbear as #SSH client.
So you could at the very least use it as a #SSH #Terminal #distro...
Sadly this means it will require at least an #i686 and won't run on an #i486 anymore as a lot of memory was eaten up by #486SX woraround code in the kernel...

#ETHERNET_CONNECT_TWO_LINUX_MACHINES_DIRECT_CABLE
This is a lot faster than connecting them through the subdomain, (usually same router),
In my case about 10x (50MB/s vs 5MB/s.
I use Fedora, but this will work on all Linux machines kernel 6.x , (with systemd) the packages names may differ.
If Linux distro is not systemd, need to start the ssh server service daemon (sshd) differently (pls, post).
If you forget this thread name, just search mastodon for #ETHERNET
Good transfers !

Not that I don't think #Floppinux is bad - far from it.
But considering that #TinyCore #Linux can do 17 MB apparently with default userland and 23 MB with #Xorg + #Desktop I do want to get things to just work without being able to at least have #IPv4 #Ethernet working and being able to mount #SMB shares or at least #SSH into things using #Dropbear.

@mattl @ernie @vwestlife The core problem is that drivers are pretty bulky and so far I only added a few NICs but that already blew stuff out of the water at ~ 1,6MB just for the #Kernel (bzImage)...
https://archive.org/details/floppinux-manual/
And not even having #Ethernet is kinda making an #OS that isn't #MSDOS pointless unless you're dealing with #MedicalIT...

Time for a new #podcast! This time I talked with some deeply knowledgeable #engineers about Intel Ethernet and its long #linux and #opensource history. It's a great story full of adventure! Who knew #ethernet could be so cool? @pixelgeek also joined me for this one. I hope you'll enjoy and subscribe AND please pass it on. 😁 https://openatintel.podbean.com/e/the-best-ethernet-on-mars/

@lamp maybe they have multiple Windows VMs on their storage, so deduplication & caching of disks sped it up quite well...
After all, any datacenter will decouple compute, network and storage layers as much as they can, and said storage will be transparently connected [via #FibreChannel or #iSCSI (over #Ethernet)] to some giant-ass SAN to allow for seamless host migrations...
I literally built that shit not so long ago.

Buena semana!

A quick note on using 10Gbase-T SPF+ modules at speeds below 10Gb/s (nbase-T AKA multi-gig AKA multi-rate):
When connected to a switch most 10Gbase-T SPF+ modules will negotiate a 10Gb/s link with the switch and then separately negotiate a connection with the connected client device. If the client connects at 10Gb/s everything should work smoothly. If the client connects at less than 10Gb/s you will likely see reduced speeds and increased latency as clients frequently encounter errors and must resend data. Turn on flow control for the switch port to solve this.
Example: I had a 2.5Gb/s client connected to a 10Gb/s 10Gbase-T module and throughput without flow control was all over the place but averaging around 750Mb/s with inconsistent ping times. Turning on flow control smoothed this out to a very consistent 2.5Gb/s as it should be.
