I am on the fence about ChatGPT/generative AI.

I love it and feel it is necessary to solve lots of problems but it is just so powerful.

Not to mention the AI arms race.

We need heavy duty ethicists both professional and amateur debating this all up and down our civilization.

Every is dangerous, and the more powerful the tool the more dangerous it is. Of course. Is as dangerous as ? Probably not. It might be in the same league as, oh, say —and those have done a hell of a lot of damage. But they haven’t done it by ushering in the . Instead the damage is from slow, creeping, cumulative change where the effect of any one individual event is too small to measure.

So I really think the focus on world-ending scenarios takes away from the conversations we need to be having. This reminds me a lot of the simmering “how far is too far” debate, especially the kibitzing from “” with no understanding of the and an sense that isn’t nearly as developed as they think it is. There are conversations on that topic I’d like to have without the constant Greek chorus of “! ! !”

@aidenbenton Yes. AI only models what it sees. And instead of ”trying to repair” it, they would best be used as mirrors to what people are really like.

Also, public application of needs 100% on the data. No business decision is too important to allow cultural bias to contaminate the system.

This is where need to work together with . The problem is no longer algoritmical.

@BronwynHemsley Interesting. Just knowing that ChatGPT was developed by OpenAI makes me cautious. OpenAI is a research and development company, founded as a nonprofit in 2015 by Silicon Valley investor Sam Altman and Elon Musk and backed financially by venture capitalists such as Peter Thiel, and other investors. Then there are the questions of ethics,,,! Any listening?

As the editor of Hastings Bioethics Forum, I’m pleased to launch a periodic series of essays, written by clinical and based on real cases.
Each year, tens of thousands of clinical ethics case consultations in U.S. hospitals respond to fraught, complex questions that affect patient care. Anyone who provides or receives medical care could at some point become involved in a clinical ethics case. Read the first case. Tell me what you think!

This is a fascinating response from Dr. Miller, from whose work I've learned much over the years!

Some thoughts:

During public health policy deliberations, should there by an ethicist present? HC fellow Franklin Miller responds to @ZekeEmanuel@twitter.com and colleagues's piece in @NEJM@twitter.com. thehastingscenter.org/should-e
