Today's song is Heiwote by Ethiopian saxophonist Tèsfa-Maryam Kidané.
He got his start in the police band of Asmara and has been described as having an “American” ear, influenced by the American radio programmes broadcast from the US base in Asmara. He was one of the first Ethiopian musicians to go to the USA where he still works, mainly in the clubs of the Ethiopian and Eritrean diasporas.

We're back this Monday for another wonderful song, namely Suur Tõll by UK ethio-jazz inspired trio The Sorcerers who take influences from ethiojazz as well as soundtracks of European horror films of the 60s and 70s and merge to a lovely funky mix.
The song is funky as heck and a perfect start on a Monday morning (unless you're in an open office and, like me, can't stop yourself from humming along...)

Late night listening: Mulatu Astatke - Ethiopiques Vol. 4. My former colleague Eli Smith (founder of the Brooklyn Folk Festival) gave me a CD-R of this music 16 or 17 years ago. I promptly filed it on a shelf where it sat unlistened to, until tonight. Bad job by me! But better late than never. Marvelous '60s jazz from Ethiopia. Late night hooka lounge vibes to the max.
