According to a paper, in throat games of people, there are frequent occurrences of natural sounds imitation, for example "sound of northern lights"...

Found another cool bit of culture from southern Algeria. To participate in something like that would have to be trance inducing.

Today is (apparently) Uncommon Instrument Awareness Day, so here are 4 images showing 16th Century Western perceptions of musicians and their instruments (some more uncommon than others) from the continents of America, Africa, Asia and Europe.
From a book showing the 8 pageants held for the Christening of Princess Elisabeth of Hesse in 1596.
Bavarian State Library: Cod.icon. 340.

A new article, not exactly ready, but worth mentioning. It is all about traditional musical games.
So far it mentions cultures: Ainu, Inuit, Japanese, Lummi, Maori, and Polish.

Please, if you know about any traditional games that let players make music (and considerably shape it -- a background song is not enough here ;) ) please let know in any available way. Serious sources are cool too! ;)

Interesting. I had a lot of those same assumptions about music "sounding" Middle Eastern. Now that the Middle East has though, I sure enjoy listening to it.

I think Farya Faraji's ethnic music project could have a very healing impact. A lot of us have been starving for this kind of thing. Something of the past that hasn't been Hollywoodized.

Had the best day yesterday showing a fantastic group of students from the University of Basil around Highland Perthshire, introducing them to the Scottish Folk Revival.

My highlight was discussing Gramsci with them outside of Hamish Henderson's childhood home 🤩

Not sure if I'm allowed to share group photos, so here I am in Glen Shee expertly identifying their mini bus as it came up the road 😅

Talk about strong female voices joined in an exotic and enticing Eastern European (Bulgarian) tune. This group, Blato Zlato, is based in New Orleans (curiously), with members from Bulgaria, New Mexico and Cali. I find their music quite haunting, unique and exotic. Maybe you will too. youtu.be/ZMIiR0u279I

I was invited to join a small reading group that will discuss this excellent book Klezmer: Music, History, and Memory (2016) by Walter Zev Feldman. The first one is this afternoon so I'm re-reading the intro.

It's one of the only book-length, rigorously researched English-language works about music. Although there is room for disagreement with some of its conclusions it's stil definitely an essential work.

"Researchers Recognized The Language"

cubby posted The Language You Cry In, "an amazing scholarly detective story that searches for —and finds— meaningful links between African Americans and their ancestral past. It bridges hundreds of years and thousands of miles from the Gullah people of present-day Georgia back to 18th century Sierra Leone."

2 images. The first, Mana playing a homemade fiddle. Similar instruments are used by other Karen peoples. The second is Mana's husband and friends making panpipes from fresh bamboo. Similar panpipes are played by other Karen peoples eg Pa O. They're usually made when needed and thrown out afterwards.
