Are some US citizens seriously getting upset about paying 8€ processing fee for a registration necessary to enter Europe?
If so, I want to remind them that that's exactly what I have to do whenever I travel to the US using the ESTA system and that the fee for that is 21$.
Considering these points I would furthermore like to ask them to quit whining.
Not just journalists, obviously, though their reporting on #ETIAS with barely a mention of the equivalent US and upcoming UK systems is a good example of not just incompetence but also intense anglo navel-gazing and a reminder of what it means for the #EU to be the only geopolitical block on the planet for which media narratives are built almost exclusively by foreign journalists.
*taps sign* we should expand #Arte into a #EuropeanUnion public broadcaster, ask your national governments.

The first time I learned that one of my EU friends couldn’t just visit the US but instead had to pay and apply through #ESTA, I was mad on his behalf. #Europe is now making the same mistake as the US by implementing #ETIAS. https://reason.com/2023/07/28/say-goodbye-to-permissionless-travel/
I was resting some American news about the #ETIAS the new entering form non-EU citizens will need to access the #Schengen area, and was surprised to see almost none mentioned that this is directly inspired by the #ESTA form the US requires to everyone since years.
Now I find another news about how #Trump is enraged by ESTIAS 😂
ESTIAS will actually be cheaper than ESTA (half price) and comes with years of delay... But in a way it will be the first EU tax and that's ✨

US journalism gets worse and worse. They're right, Trump is ridiculous criticizing #ETIAS (€8 for an electronic visa waiver to be able to visit the European Union) - but mentioning #ESTA - the #CBP program which does exactly the same for visa free entry - would have been basic journalist work - and this didn't happen. The reader now thinks only Europe does that.
Canadians and American citizens will have to apply, as of January 2024, for an #ETIAS #visa to enter #Europe.
The cost is about $8USD/$9.50CAD per traveler over 18 and the visa will be good for 3 yrs or until your passport expiration, whichever comes first. Kids under 18 don't need to pay for theirs.
#Travel just got more complicated! With Europe being hit by extreme heatwaves, tornados and torrential rains, shoulder seasons will probably be the times to visit moving forward for us.
