Our paper on a large # of near-IR lenses in #Euclid/#Roman is on #arXiv today, led by my excellent PDRA James Pearson. TL;DR: ~1% of faint #SMGs predicted to be strongly lensed, proved with #JWST. Observed lensed numbers (blue) cutely skewered at faint end by model prediction. #astrodon https://arxiv.org/abs/2309.00888

#ESAEuclid needs some further work its Fine Guidance Sensor software. The FGS system is a set of detectors and software that keeps the #Euclid spacecraft accurately pointing at the desired location. ππΏ ππ½ π There is work on this going on and since the pointing accuracy was not as good as required, #Euclid temporarily stopped its Performance Verification phase to get this sorted out. π€·π»ββοΈ

Please see this earlier thread for more info on the ESA Euclid space telescope- https://fosstodon.org/@AkaSci/110638590040160036
Euclid is currently in its operating orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point, from where it will search the Universe for dark matter and dark energy.
It will make a 3D-map of the cosmos by observing billions of galaxies out to 10 billion light-years, across more than a third of the sky.

The Euclid FGS shares the focal plane and optics with the VIS instrument. Two sets of sensors are mounted on 2 sides of the VIS detector. The CCDs are kept at 150K.
The FGS images the sky on the sides of the main field of view and locks on to known stars to help the Attitude and Orbit Control System (AOCS) maintain accurate pointing.

The ESA Euclid space telescope has run into a snag with its Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS), which is not able to provide accurate pointing info under certain conditions.
The team is halting the Perf Verification phase and returning the spacecraft to commissioning mode to resolve the issue.
Euclid will explore the dark Universe. It will make a 3D-map of the cosmos by observing billions of galaxies out to 10 billion light-years, across more than a third of the sky.
Stay tuned.
