I stand behind my prior post, regarding lack of public health mandates for Covid-19, being quite unlike the formal or informal practice of eugenics, until I am able to freely access your written work.

Almost two years ago my uncle passed away.

The story starts earlier. Almost four years before his death, he was diagnosed with cancer. He was healthy, only just turned 50, and barely had any symptoms. It was known to be terminal, but there were treatment options to prolong his life and ease his symptoms once they'd appear.

Later on some of the treatments didn't work so well anymore, but my uncle was still very much going strong. The doctor had him start on a new type of treatment, but a possible very low chance side effect was heart issues or heart failure.

Lo and behold, my uncle got heart issues. His girlfriend stayed over to help him for a little while, because suddenly he had started to feel bad. Then he got some sort of heart attack and dropped unconscious. His girlfriend called the emergency number and the ambulance arrived very quickly.

Two paramedics entered the house and immediately told my uncle's girlfriend that they didn't think it was worth it to resuscitate a cancer patient. "He only has a few years left at most anyway."

His girlfriend panicked and started arguing with them. Every second counts! Go to work! He really wants to live! He never signed a DNR! Revive him! This is a medication side effect, help him!

She fought and fought and after a few minutes they gave in, resuscitated him and brought him to the hospital. My mother arrived quickly afterwards. My uncle's girlfriend was traumatized from seeing her boyfriend die before her eyes and having to beg the paramedics to save him. I have never heard my mother so upset and I had no way to comfort her, I was too shocked by the story too. We all realized he would have died if he had not been at the side of a very assertive loved one at that very moment, who somehow remained clear-headed enough to argue and convince the paramedics.

My uncle was lucky. Within days he was fine again. His doctor switched his cancer treatment and the heart issues disappeared. He went on to live another good year in which he completed his bucket list and spent a lot of quality time with his girlfriend. Only after that he started to decline and almost two years ago he made use of the euthanasia law to pass away calmly with my mother at his side.

His death is a painful memory for me, because of the suffering of the ones involved of course, but also because it led to a very #covid unsafe cremation service that caused a lot of fighting between my parents, and between my parents and myself. Death is always difficult, but even more so in a pandemic.

Mostly I'm recounting this story because it's only one of so, so many refusals of care of a family member by medical professionals. If you talk to chronically ill, disabled, caretakers, or anyone else who expresses extreme distrust and anger at the medical world, keep this in mind. They are probably carrying a lot of these kind of tales with them. Dozens of incidences, maybe even hundreds. I know I am dragging at least a mountain of them with me in my heart at all times.

When a human pathogen, such as the novel Covid-19 virus, is found to be a threat to mortality, like other viruses and bacterial infections before it, it is likely that those with weaker health including the elderly, disabled and immunocompromised are more likely to die.

This is not news but verifiable, scientific evidence.

COVID-19 illness and death has disproportionately impacted marginalized groups the world over. In the United States, Black and Indigenous people have endured the largest risk of death. Disabled and chronically ill people have continued to isolate as their peers “return to normal”, bearing sole liability for their own safety in a society that deems their lives not worth the “sacrifice” of public health measures. While public and institutional policy makers bare personal responsibility for “survival of the fittest” approaches to public health, data science and visualization has contributed to and legitimized many of these eugenic policy decisions through design tropes I characterize as ‘eugenic visuality’. In this paper, I explore how inadequacies and obscurities in COVID-19 data visualization have contributed to and sustained public narratives that devalue marginalized lives for the comfort of white-supremacist and capitalist social norms. While I focus on visualizations and statements provided by the CDC, the implications extend beyond any individual or institution to our collective preconceptions and values. Namely, unexamined biases and unquestioned norms are embedded in data science and visualization, constraining how data is represented and interpreted. These assumptions limit how data can be leveraged in the pursuit of just social policy. Therefore, I propose guiding principles for a Just Visuality in data science and representation, supported by the work of disabled activists and scholars of color.

Dad got #covid this summer with my cousin and sister because they all just wanted a British family birthday here in #BC for his 80th.

We had been booked to join them up coast but found out two days prior to leaving. We called off the trip with several folks covid sick at the house we were planning to stay.

It was then we discovered #bcferries no longer refunds for covid cancellations, as to them the pandemic is over. We had to pay to drop our reservation days from our trip, knowing the ferry we had reserved would only be 75% full.

For #BritishColumbia businesses like #bcferries, ignoring the pandemic is just an extra cash grab. Book another ferry now, pay us 20 bucks or go get sick. They ultimately profited off our loss.

They only sent this to me once I demanded that they explain themselves in writing, BTW. They tried to just straight up lie to me over the phone and claim that it had always been their policy to force people to unmask. They carefully avoid doing so in this letter. I would like to fucking know who changed this policy, when it changed, and why it changed. Because I was trying to fucking deposit my money in my account when I was denied service, so they can't exactly pretend I was going to rob the bank, hidden by my COVID mask. Yet that's exactly what this letter implies. It's just completely disgusting, #eugenicist bullshit. Just like the #eugenics doctors who forcibly sterilized thousands of Americans over the decades, these eugenicists will also likely face no meaningful consequences for their actions.
