A few years ago Dave Neary started me down the path of trying to fill in the details of how the polar coordinates derivation of Euler's formula works. It takes a bit of detail (and a few pages) to connect the dots but this is what I came up with:

I'm an aging, retired in fact, person somewhat of your ilk. I dabble in #R, #PDL, #Yorick, #Euler, and #Octave. #Python wasn't so much the thing in my day as it is now, so I never used it.

While finding a polynomial P(x) for sin(x) isn't the main result of Euler's solution to the Basel problem [1], it is still pretty amazing that it can be done. Even more mind-boggling is the Weierstrass Factorization Theorem [2] itself, which tells us that this can be done for a wide variety of functions.

I wrote a bit about the connection between the zeta function ζ(s) and the primes, a relationship discovered by Euler in 1737 (the so-called product formula or as Derbyshire calls it, the "golden key" [1]).
