My MacBook's built-in #keyboard is German but on my desk there's a mechanical ANSI keyboard (#Nuphy Air75). When I’m at my desk I want to use the #EurKEY layout, else I’d like to automatically switch to the German layout.
Easy to do with a #KeyboardMaestro macro:
Triggers:
- At system wake
- When the Mac is unlocked
Actions:
- If USB device with name containing “Air75” is detected, set Keyboard Layout to “EurKEY”; else set Keyboard Layout to “German”
Super-simple but useful!

@mikewink I too switched from away from the german keyboard for better #neovim compatibility. However pretty soon I got annoyed by the missing äöü@ß 😂
May I recommend #EurKEY it's like the US keyboard, but all the european letters are nicely available too. Eg Alt+a becomes ä

would love to have a mac-like press & hold for special characters but i guess i’ll settle for #eurkey for now >:///
@kytta Considering that you've already remapped the German Umlaute, you might be interested in #Eurkey, which comes as "eu" on most Linux distributions and can also be installed on Windows and macOS
It also uses Option/Alt for most European accented characters, while having the familiar QWERTY layout, so that one can find all the special characters needed for coding
It certainly is the best alternative for me, if I didn't bring my #QMK keyboard with my Colemak-like custom mappings
I discovered that someone local was selling a used #Ducky One 2 Mini #keyboard on Facebook, and thought I'd grab it as a late Christmas/I'm so busy present for myself.
It's got cherry mx black keys which is new for me, since I'm used to blues. It's also an ANSI layout, something I've been wanting to try. I'm thinking of testing the #EurKEY layout.
It seems I might be able to flash it with #QMK firmware as well 🎉
@publicvoit@graz.social I haven't tried it myself, but there is also the #EurKEY layout that uses the US ANSI layout, but makes it easier to type letters used in european languages:
@sotneStatue @yyp @metalune Not sure if that's what @sotolf uses, but #EurKEY is pretty great:

There is a variant of EurKEY for #Colemak-DH (https://gitlab.com/jungganz/eurkey-colemak-mod-dh) but I guess they just use the multilingual Colemak layout (https://colemak.com/Multilingual) or something custom, since they have talked about using Colemak in the past.
