Aenigma (1987), a fine late Lucio Fulci film (I do like late Fulci). Seriously surreal and twisted. Unsettling and perplexing but in a way that is original and distinctive. It takes place in a nightmare world in which reality plays little part.

Sergio Martino's The Island of the Fishmen (1979). Prison ship survivors are marooned on an island and they're up against monsters, voodoo and mad people. It's a glorious romp done with style and energy and a slight steampunk vibe. Great fun.

The Blancheville Monster (Alberto De Martino, 1963) is slightly diminished by an overloaded, slightly convoluted, cliché laden story arc. However, solid art direction and striking, well chosen, locations around Monastery of Santa Maria La Real de Valdeiglesias in Spain, elevate proceedings somewhat and this proto-gialloesque Poe inspired Gothic. It does, eventually, find its rhythm for a solid enough final third.

The Garden of Torment, a 1976 French film based on Octave Mirbeau’s 1899 novel.

Set in China in the 1920s, the warlord era.

Erotic, arty, provocative, disturbing and convincingly decadent. The main female character is both evil and weirdly sympathetic.

There’s definitely a strong de Sade influence here.

Very highly recommended.

The Nude Vampire (1970), second of Jean Rollin's vampire films.

You might expect a straightforward erotic horror movie. If so you’re going to become very disoriented very quickly. Rollin was a surrealist. I don’t mean he just used surrealist images and techniques to add atmosphere. This movie is surrealism all the way through.

Great movie.

Imagine my surprise when I started up Jess Franco’s NIGHT OF THE SKULL (1974) and discovered it was another adaptation of THE CAT AND THE CANARY. (The credits also nonsensically reference Poe, and attribute the script to a collaboration between Franco and “James P. Jhonson,” who is also Franco.)

Naked Girl Murdered in the Park (1972) certainly has a title that will get your attention. It also suggests you’re about to see a giallo. It is, sort of. It's crazy enough to be a giallo.

In fact it's an Alfonso Brescia movie. He made some of the most gloriously insane movies of all time. This is one of his less crazy efforts but it's pretty enjoyable.

DR. ORLOFF’S MONSTER (1964) isn’t the masterpiece of Jess Franco’s first, less personal, pre-NECRONOMICON (aka SUCCUBUS) phase of his career. Said masterpiece would come two years later, with THE DIABOLICAL DR. Z. Its plotting is indifferent, giving us a villain whose motives are rather obscure, and leaving little room for Franco to indulge his phantasmagorical explorations of human identity and sexuality.

That doesn’t mean it isn’t worth watching.

Aldo Lado's Who Saw Her Die? is a 1972 giallo and watching this movie it’s impossible not to be reminded of Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now although Lado’s film predates Roeg’s by a year. There are striking similarities.

Who Saw Her Die? Is perhaps more of a conventional thriller, albeit a clever and complex one with plenty of psychological depth. A fine suspenseful giallo.

She Killed in Ecstasy (1971), perhaps as close as Jess Franco got to a relatively straightforward non-supernatural horror film.

Soledad Miranda stars so there's plenty of steamy eroticism.

Franco was fascinated by the awesome power of female sexuality but this time he is dealing with the even more awesome power of female love, especially when it turns to hate.
