The first wave of titles for the 2023 European Film Awards have been announced.

The European Film Academy has unveiled its list of 19 films handpicked for the academy members to review, which will be bolstered by additional titles from summer festivals, set to be announced next month.

Among the titles, several prestigious films from Berlin and Cannes have made the cut.

Ruben Östlund's Triangle of Sadness won top prizes at the European Film Awards.

The anti-capitalist satire has dominated the 2022 awards receiving the top prize and three others.

Östlund picked up Best Picture in addition to Best Director, Best Screenplay, and winning one of his actors, Croatian-Danish Zlatko Buric, the Best Male Performance award.

His film hit the screens after receiving the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

The documentary Mariupol 2 by Mantas Kvedaravičius, who was killed in Ukraine while making the film, has won a European Film Award as best documentary of 2022.

During the awards ceremony on Saturday, the award was accepted by the filmmaker’s daughter, Tėja Kvedaravičiūtė.

“My father lost his life delivering medicine to people. I feel so proud to have had someone like that in my life,” she said.
