A victory for #transparency!! 💪🇪🇺
European Democracy Consulting paved for the way for information on #europeanparties to be available from the @europarl_en to citizens without delay!
Before, information took up to 8 years to be available in full.

New @EP_ThinkTank report on the #spitzenkandidaten process: its origin, its evolution, its promise. And therefore, indirectly, on #europeanparties.
Always a good read ahead of the next European elections #ep2024.

In the same series as before: geographical origin of MEPs members of #europeanparties. 🇪🇺
👉 Definitely more readable as an interactive chart: https://public.tableau.com/views/Memberstate-to-Europeanpoliticalpartyvisualisation/Memberstate-to-Europeanpoliticalpartyvisualisation
Sometimes, you just can't find the chart you're looking for. So you make it.
Here is the cross-membership of MEPs between #europeanparties and EP political groups.

So close. Soooo close! Once again, #europeanparties are confused with political groups of the European Parliament. Maybe the report's title was not clear enough, @POLITICOEurope 😄
👉 But do check the report (co-authored by the great Wouter Wolfs): https://institutdelors.eu/en/publications/partis-politiques-europeens/
While we note marginal progress, European Democracy Consulting continues to call on EU institutions to improve reporting on #europeanparties, especially for financial data and including replacing PDF documents with machine-readable data. Publishing PDFs is not #transparency.

It unfortunately says a lot about the predominance of nationality v. ideology that a German SPD/@PES
government would prefer a German CDU/@EPP candidate over a (potentially non-German) socialist candidate for the presidency of the @EU_Commission

In Jan '23, European Democracy Consulting asked the European Parliament for a note on the final reports of #europeanparties' funding for the year 2021. Two months later, our request is denied.
Why? Because, if the decision was made public, someone (?) could pressure parties in challenging the decisions made... #transparency #again
European parties receive at least 90% of their funding from EU taxpayers' money — we must be able to know who received how much. In full. And not eight years late.

🥂 It's that time of the year!! It's 2023 and we finally get the reports of #europeanparties's funding! For 2021... Better late than never.
PS: we "get them" in that they are discussed by the Bureau, so we lodge a request for access that will be extended. So in a month and a half.
PPS: of course, in one and a half months, we will only be provided with the redacted version. Expect the unredacted version around 2026-2027.
Twitter has proved a great tool, but it's headed in a shady direction, so let's give 🐘 a try. If you want to hear more about EU democracy, #europeanparties and electoral law reform, follow me and help spread the word! 🇪🇺
RT @Louis_Drounau: The EU Parliament is unhappy it is not given correspondence between #Hungary and the @EU_Commission.
Meanwhile, when I ask for an EP Bureau decision on the funding of #europeanparties, I apparently need to wait over 8 years (!!!) for the unredacted version. 👍
