K Muni & ND -- Down in the Rain

Hip-hop at Eurovision is always a tricky prospect, but I think with some tinkering and a fuller-sounding backing track, this could have been a worthy entry, even if it would have been a bigger risk than a lot of others in this selection. The two rappers play off each other well, which opens up the possibility of some dynamic staging.

Wild Youth -- We Are One

While this song has always been "okay/decent" in my books, it's clear why Wild Youth are going to Liverpool. They were arguably the most polished of the acts, although the singer certainly needs to make more eye contact with the camera. Given the right staging, this could become a solid entry to the contest.

CONNOLLY - Midnight Summer Night

Along with a lot of the fans, this was my favourite song going in, but alas nerves took hold here as well. Even though Connolly still finished a close second, I fear she may have struggled at the contest proper. I appreciate what she was trying to do with the extra vocal parts, but I think it was too much in the end. But what a great opportunity for someone so young -- I hope we see her again.

I think it's fair to say that everyone can get behind the sentiment of this song, and I wish Nora and John all the best. Beyond that, I thought the staging was pretty good -- the video on the screen matched the vibe of the song well. It's just that I don't think the track has much appeal, and not enough for the contest.

ADGY - Too Good For Your Love

Recovered from a difficult start (probably also some nerves) to put together a decent performance. Balance between joining in on the choreography and just standing still was better, room for improvement.

Leila Jane -- Wild

I liked this song in its studio version, but the quality (read: lack thereof) of the RTE setup really does make or break acts. Clearly some nerves, and a vocal performance that was all over the place at times, unfortunately. I think with that kind of staging you have to commit to dance almost all of the time, or not at all rather than somewhere in between.

Having viewed all the live performances at Belgium's #Eurosong -- it's always good to get a reminder that Eurovision has an audio and a visual component, and you need to get both right to achieve success.

Chérine may have won the jury vote and been a fan favourite going in, but the staging was by far the weakest of the evening. It looked amateurish compared to all the others.
