"A dog weighing 15 kilograms produces some 8.2 tons of CO2 over the course of a 13-year lifespan. These 8.2 tons of CO2 are the equivalent of 13 return flights from Berlin to Barcelona and almost as much as the CO2 emitted in the production of a mid-class luxury car, such as a Mercedes C250"

“The 8.2 tons of CO2 produced over 13 years equate to an annual CO2 emission of 630 kilograms. If we place these 630 kilograms of CO2 in the context of the two tons per year indicated as environmentally acceptable for humans by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, then every dog owner can see that almost one third of their CO2 budget is already used up by their dog.”

Without the pet food industry providing a depository for meat waste, the price would rise and the pollution would be concentrated and obvious, instead of spread over large areas in dog & cat poo. Keeping pets on meat food is, I think, incompatible with veganism, and certain harms planetary health.

Blooms of #Cyanobacteria pose a significant threat to #freshwater systems including rivers driving both #eutrophication and its dire implications for freshwater species as oxygen availability plummets and also the additional threat posed by #cyanotoxins produced by some Cyanobacteria.

This new research in Scientific Reports takes a #metagenomics and Q-PCR approach to explore the composition of the Cyanobacterial populations and their cyanotoxin production gene in major rivers across the United States (in 2019) and identifies Microcystis as the key toxin producing genus across this study.

This lake is home to many impacted indigenous communities.
