Just letting you all now that this pony instance/server is only one of many instances/servers all across Mastodon, and even beyond other social media services (i.e misskey, GNU.Social, peer.tube and even Tumblr and flickr is working on joining the Fediverse).

Like email, you don't need to be under the same email service provider to get in touch within one another.

Mastodon is the same. You don't have to be in the same server or even be on Mastodon to connect with each other (as long as it runs ActivityPub, which makes this tech all possible.

You can also search for a username to send messages to within a post with type @.username (- the .)

Also, don't forget to change global/public to followers only or mentioned users only by tapping/clicking on the Global Icon within the posts tool bar (depending on which Mastodon app you're using).
