Park 59/242 - 10th Ave & Clement Mini Park! Surrounding the Richmond branch of the SFPL, this park adds some beautiful plant life and playground space to the area around this historic building. #everySFpark
Park 58/242 - St. Mary's Park & Rec Center! This park boasts San Francisco's largest playground for kids of all abilities, after-school programs, martial arts, Aztec dance, classes for seniors, baseball, basketball, tennis, gardening, and more. #everySFpark
Park 57/242 - John McLaren Park! This is the third largest park in SF after Golden Gate Park and the Presidio. This park is named after John McLaren, who is credited with planting over two million trees in his lifetime and serving as superintendent of Golden Gate Park for a whopping 56 years. The park features playgrounds, BBQ spots, lakes, a 9-hole golf course, a fantastic trail (Philosopher's Way), and SF's largest grasslands. #everySFpark
Park 56/242 - Visitacion Valley Greenway! This one's actually six parks in one, spanning six blocks of the Visitacion Valley neighborhood and connecting the commercial hub to John McLaren park. I found this as part of the SF Crosstown Trail (more on that later) and fell in love immediately! What a great path through this neighborhood. #everySFpark
Park 55/242 - Buena Vista Park! This one's a VIP. Established in 1867 as Hill Park, this is the oldest and 14th largest park in San Francisco. Bounded by the steep and winding Buena VIsta Ave to the south, and Haight St to the north, this park is heavily forested and loaded with excellent walking paths, hidden tennis courts, a playground, and some spooky history. From the 1920s-40s after decades of debate, the city decided to move all cemeteries (except for the incredible one at Mission Dolores) out of the city and to Colma. Unclaimed headstones from SF cemeteries were used to create the seawall at Aquatic Park, the Breakwater at St. Francis Yacht Club and... pictured here, for the rain gutters in Buena Vista Park. Every time I see these headstones I can't help but feel a little sad and thankful for those who've been lost and forgotten to time but whose memory in some warped way lives on to keep our historic park alive. #everySFpark
Park 52/242 - Jefferson Square! Occupying one city block between Hayes Valley, St. Mary’s Cathedral, and City Hall, this park is a great place to let you children or dogs run free, take a nap in the sun, or admire some beautiful pollinator-friendly gardens. #everySFpark
Park 51/242 - Union Square! Commemorating the… *checks notes* American victory at Manila Bay in the Spanish-American War exactly 122 years ago! Great place for spotting tourists, skaters, and the occasional K-Pop music video recording. #everySFpark
This one’s a total mystery. Al’s Park! Located on a slope off Corbett St. There’s no street sign but “MONO” imprinted into the sidewalk. 🤷 Anybody know Al? Did this used to be a tiny street and Al converted it into a park? #everySFpark
What have we here? Corbett Slope Community Park! Hmm… I wonder how many parks are managed by Public Works and not Rec & Parks Dept? We may need a sequel to #everySFpark
Park FIFTY/242 - Franklin Park! I have passed this park a hundred times and never walked up to it. Great playground, soccer fields, and gardens here te in the heart of Mission / Potrero! The path around the park is a great spot for jogging. #everySFpark
Woah. The last time I was here at the corner of Natoma and Mary (behind the Chronicle building) this was just a dingy parking lot with a little-known pop up called Box across the street. I remember sitting on the curb of the parking lot eating fantastic chicken and waffles. Now it’s a really nice park!! Doesn’t appear to be city-run? #everySFpark
Today’s the first day I’ve actually seen the gondola at Transbay (Salesforce) Park running, so I had to take it! Weirdly the park is not run by Rec and Parks Dept… is it run by TJPA? Anyway, it’s a great spot worth a visit! Also, lol… Seems like THE place to have a one-on-one meeting/walk with your boss. #everySFpark
I’m visiting EVERY San Francisco Rec & Park Dept park. Follow me here on Mastodon to join me! Today starts with park 49/242 - Howard and Langton Community Garden! Wow. This is probably the best-maintained, most beautiful community garden I’ve seen in SF so far. So many beautiful and established plants. The members of this garden are lucky (and skilled)! #everySFpark
Park 48/242 - Patricia’s Green pulls Hayes Valley together. It’s surrounded by ice cream and coffee shops, clothing boutiques, and a biergarten. A great little patch of green. #everySFpark
Park 47/242 - This monument to civil life; this temple to law and liberty; ceasessly stunning and imposing; beautiful inside and out; built and rebuilt and rebuilt again; it’s City freakin’ Hall!! I had the good fortune of visiting today and taking a tour (only offered Friday during the workday… 🙄), and was able to access the Board of Supervisors chamber while it was completely empty. I recommend it. #everySFpark
I just came across @danc’s #everySFPark project! I’ve seen some of my favorites with good photos and a nice summary. This is such a cool idea!
Park 46/242 - Just along the cable car line and in the shadow of Coit Tower and Sts. Peter and Paul sits the Joe DiMaggio North Beach Playground and Pool. This place was POPPIN’! Tons of kids and parents, and even a bocce court. Check it out. #everySFpark
Park 44/242 - War Memorial and Opera House. I highly recommend visiting the veterans’ monument here. It is simple, relatively small, but impactful. Water slowly flows down one layer after another until it abruptly disappears into the ground. I believe it is symbolic of the experience of war and life cut short. As a bonus, this is the site of the signing of the charter establishing the United Nations. #everySFpark
Park 43/242 - San Francisco Public Library Main Branch! What came first, the spiral logo or the skylight? This temple of tomes was built in the late 90s and features some excellent collections. I just spent all afternoon researching my neighborhood in the SF History Center. Bonus photo: Asian Art Museum - the original main library (explains why they have the likes of Cervantes and Dickens engraved on the facade). #everySFpark
Park 42/242 - Page St. Community Garden! This oasis is tucked away so well on #SlowPage Street that I missed it the first time I passed here. Glad to be back in SF after a recent family trip to Vietnam! The weather in SF is perfect right now! 200 parks to go… #everySFpark
