Here is the same dataset, but with the 13 week moving average starting at 2019 Week 1 to zoom in a bit.

Last week plotted is 2023 Week 3. We are currently Week 26.

is a very trailing indicator.

Mortality Working Group: Confirmation of 20,000 excess deaths for 2022 in Australia

Total for the full year 2022 is 12% (+20,200 deaths) i.e. there were over 20,000 more deaths in 2022 than would have been expected if the pandemic had not happened. This is slightly more than we had projected based on data to November.

“Total for the first 11 months of 2022 is 11% (+17,900 deaths).
Our expectation is that excess mortality for the full year 2022 will be 12% i.e. there were nearly 20,000 more deaths in 2022 than would have been expected if the had not happened.”

Just did a long thread on Twitter.

It will possibly kill me to redo it here, and I haven't figured out cross-posting yet.

So, here's the threadreader link: threadreaderapp.com/thread/162

@eniko This paywalled article shows that is probably again caused by (because it can weaken immunity, at least for a while), and also by the heavy overload on hospitals, which causes postponed healthcare which also causes more deaths.
The large number of now ill people who were working in the healthcare sector might also have impact. That should still be researched further.

@dgbassani fascinating - I did the same but for UK, USA, Aus, Canada and NZ. Stark differences, both in early responses and the long term. via ourworldindata.org/explorers/c
