This morning I reconnected with an old friend. She had been a hardcore JW for decades and woke up during COVID. Gives me hope for others. #exJW #exCult

One for my fellow ExJWs. I grew up in the US (California, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas) where men couldn't have beards. I now live in the UK, and have recently seen two bearded men out with the literature carts. Is this new, or a geographical thing? #ExJW #ExCult

Nothing in the world could make me happier than this at this moment. This has been such a long journey to finally feel safe to be me and live an authentic life. Since leaving the JW org in April '22 I have grown so much and become more and more comfortable with myself every day. I'd love to erase some of the terrible doctrines such as "Christian Perfection" and "Entire Sanctification" but they will likely be there forever, fucking up my mental processes at sometimes random moments that seem unrelated. I don't know how so many of them are even functioning at all. The more I realized the implication of my indoctrinations the more I saw why I could never grow up.

So I'm asking people who know first-hand, what are some GOOD media portrayals of cults and how they work?

For me, Severance has been the best example. The innie/outie split is exactly how it feels to be inside of cult mind control. The way Lumon twists the meanings of words to scare people is subtle but completely accurate. The walling off of memory is also reminiscent of how you deal with 'bad' thoughts.

As far as documentaries I liked the HBO one on Heaven's Gate.

Cults are now everywhere in media, and usually the way it's handled is completely off-base.

Wearing weird clothes & singing weird songs is a small part of identity control but it's not the most important factor. Usually that's what's highlighted in documentaries, film.

The key factor is that you censor your own mind, you actively forget and avoid thoughts that are against the rules. You split your personality. Words take on new meanings which are entirely emotional. 🧵

Here's a shocker!

The first movie I EVER saw in a theater was Jurassic Park.

Imagine escaping a cult where 70 people would watch Jesus of Nazareth on a tiny b&w tv once a month for "special night" to seeing JURASSIC FUCKING PARK. yep. #exCult

I grew up a Jehovah's Witness. It had a lot of lasting impacts on me, mostly negative. But one piece I'm happy to carry with me is their rejection of nationalism, and general suspicion towards American propaganda.

Thanksgiving should've never been celebrated. Rebranding it as friendsgiving doesn't do much to change the tradition. It's still going to be on the calendar but we can change how we relate to it - make it a day of solidarity & action.
