The Balance Intensity Scale training video has been updated. See a broader range of intensities demonstrated and how to apply the rating scale to static and dynamic balance exercises. Access the scale and the training video on the BIS website here: monash.edu/medicine/balance-in

Exercise research is fraught with issues, esp controlling multiple variables. Meta-analyses have limited value because of that. Recent peeve: HIIT research. e.g. Study comparing 30s hi-intensity intervals/120s recovery with 60s/60s (which, of course= better outcome). Ergo, 120s recovery (regardless of hi-int intervals)= useless. Why not compare 30s/60s? Or 60s/120s? Why change two variables instead of one? Try ratios?

Standardization in exercise studies is crucial for developing exercise prescriptions for various segments of human populations (aging, etc). Volume in resistance & endurance exercise is considered the most important variable. But what exactly is 'volume'?

Always an interesting topic of conversation, particularly in the space of how athletes are getting bigger, stronger and faster (and the continued obsession on constantly getting "bigger" or "stronger"). Rugby, football (American and Australian) and other contact sports love to talk about how athletes have evolved into superhumans (superheros?), but as a neuroscientist my concern still lies with essential organs (i.e brain) that don't (shouldn't) increase in size (we dont want hypertrophied brains!). What happens to the brain in ever increasing collision forces lauded by commentators and spectators alike is never considered or discussed (unless a brain injury occurs).
