#exim server now back in service again. What a palaver that was to sort out. My opinion of exim is definitely tainted now.
Nearly there on the #exim de-taint project. Got mail being delivered now, just need to do the tidying up around it.
Project #exim de-taint in progress. Got enough debug to figure out what's going wrong now.
@stickfog https://mailinabox.email/ is supposedly good; I haven't tried it myself. Putting #Linux on a low-end VPS and setting up for example #Dovecot (for #IMAP #POP3) plus #Postfix or #Exim (#SMTP) with #SpamAssassin (spam filtering) and a #LetsEncrypt cert isn't particularly hard. Adding #SPF #DKIM #DMARC for reliable outgoing mail isn't really difficult either per se, but takes a little more care. I recommend using a VPS host with full virtualization (not e.g. OpenVZ containers) and snapshots.

Shouting into the #IT void. For some reason I can't get a webmail client, hosted locally to the email server to send mail through it. The problem seems to be that the webmail clients are not sending authentication data. I've tried with #roumdcubemail and #SnappyMail and neither work. My mta is #exim. Same user details work on Thunderbird, my phone, desktop email clients. I can't work out what I'm missing!!

@ChrisShort may I ask please, why do you think this?
IMHO running an open-source email server properly with DKIM/SPF and using #postfix #zimbra #dovecot #exim whatever is one of the best ways to distribute internet services and reduce control of centralized commercial services + enhance privacy and security

@barubary @Edent Or #PCRE, the Perl Compatible* Regular Expression engine, Which is used by #PHP and #Rlang as well as the #Apache and #nginx HTTP servers, #nmap, #Postfix, and #Exim (for which it was originally written).
You can even make your #Perl compatible with PCRE instead of other Perl, but you should have a good reason (performance mostly): https://metacpan.org/pod/re::engine::PCRE2
* PCRE2’s own documentation highlights nineteen separate significant differences: https://www.pcre.org/current/doc/html/pcre2compat.html

Today I updated a server which handles e-mail from #Ubuntu 18.04 (which is soon to go out of LTS support) to Ubuntu 22.04.
Today I also learned that #Exim has gained taint tracking in that time, and this has broken my configuration and stopped mail from being delivered and DKIM signatures from being added.
Fortunately I think it only delayed incoming mail, and I've found the `allow_insecure_tainted_data` setting which means I can get to sleep better and fix it properly tomorrow.
configuring email server is complicated.
managed to send one message to a test account off server.
managed to send one message back to test account, it shows up as completed in the exim log, but not in the users inbox.
now reading about routing conditions.
also, an italian spammer tried to use the machine to relay a message. it caught it and denied it.
exim4 still not configured.
IO::Socket::INET6: connect: Connection refused
via swaks.
however, ipv6 is not set up in /etc/network/interfaces, nor do i want it to be.
hmmm.
other simple test results involved the connection timing out.

wow this is really good documentation.
also, the person who wrote it probably wants you to read all of it, but fortunately the writing style is enough that its all busted out into discreet sections, versus conceptually naggling and or bleeding through to the next..

*so* much documentation. wow lol
